STURT WINS ITS FIRST STANLEY H LEWIS TROPHY IN 25 YEARS

The SANFL wishes to congratulate the Sturt Football Club for winning the 2008 Stanley H Lewis Trophy.

It is the first time since 1983 that the Double Blues have won the trophy, which recognises excellence across all four grades of football.

The 1983 Sturt League side, like this year’s, finished second on the ladder after the minor round.

Sturt CEO Stuart Totham said winning the trophy was a significant achievement for the club.

“Winning such a highly regarded award such as the Stanley H Lewis Trophy is something that the Club is extremely proud of, especially since we have not won the award since 1983 and finished last in 2006,” he said.

“It is a direct reflection of the work put in at all levels of the club by many people ranging from volunteers, administrators, coaches and players to ensure the Sturt Football Club is a leader in South Australian football.”

The final tally was:

Club - Total (League, Reserves, U19, U17)

Sturt - 3200 (1500, 900, 420, 380)

Glenelg - 3025 (1600, 775, 420, 230)

Port Adelaide - 2145 (1000, 425, 420, 300)

Central District - 2080 (1400, 500, 150, 30)

Eagles - 2010 (900, 500, 450, 160)

North Adelaide - 2000 (900, 700, 180, 220)

Norwood - 1780 (950, 400, 330, 100)

South Adelaide - 910 (550, 50, 90, 220)

West Adelaide - 880 (200, 250, 270, 160)

The trophy, first awarded in 1962, was named for Stanley Heathcote Lewis, who served as SANFL president from 1950 to 1961.

Points are allocated on a match-by-match basis – 100 points for a League win, 50 points for a Reserves win, 30 points for an U19 win and 20 points for an U17 win.

Congratulations to Sturt, a worthy winner.

"the trophy, which recognises excellence across all grades of football"

What a totally ridiculous statement. I know it's a hobby horse of mine, but unless you finish in the top 2 or 3 at League level, you haven't got a hope of winning the trophy and wins at junior level are almost irrelevant.

The points system is ludicrous and doesn't live up to what the trophy aims to reward.

I'm sure we're both pleased that we haven't disappointed you :D

Seriously, though, I think we're raising a good point and trying to stimulate a sensible debate about a serious topic.

This isn't about any particular team, just a system which needs fixing.

I think that a team which was very successful at League level, partially successful at Reserves level and doesn't win a game at all in the 19's and 17's, would beat a team which was reasonably successful at all 4 grades under the present system.

Let me be the first to suggest they revamp the points system next year for the introduction of the U18 comp.

This begs the question: what has been the lowest ever position of the league team of the SH Lewis winner at the end of the minor round?

Cue spelly....

In fact, a histogram of all positions achieved by the league team of the SH Lewis winners would be nice :D

Sturt a worthy winner however the points calculated

Across 4 grades

Sturt - 15 + 18 + 14 + 19 = 66 wins out of 80 grades

Glenelg - 16 + 15.5 + 14 + 11.5 = 57 wins

Port - 10 + 8.5 + 13 + 15 = 46.5 wins

Eagles - 9 + 10 + 15 +8 = 42 wins

North - 9 + 14 + 6 + 11 = 40 wins

Norwood - 9.5 + 8 + 11 + 5 = 33.5 wins

Central - 14 +10 + 5 + 3 = 32 wins

West - 2 + 5 + 9 + 8 = 24 wins

South - 5.5 + 1 + 3 + 11 = 20 wins

Well given that successful clubs should be aspiring to have their league team being successful, the SHL trophy should reward league wins over all other grade wins.

I think the ratio of points is spot on.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Well done to Sturt ... After the group Carmen & Phillips assembled in the late 90's early 2000's I thought they might be in for a bit of a slip once they turned their group over, but bar 1 down season they've been very good and it's just reward I guess for good planning, full marks to them.
