Good idea LF and by the looks of things the PA committee is set in concrete. A PA MVP would certaintly be held in high regard.
As for the dominance of the Willunga football club. Well these things happen in country footy. Success breeds success. Victor Harbor clearly had it going in the 90's.

Apology accepted Turfie.![]()
Its just that Individual Awards in TEAM sports dont really interest me. Over the years I have seen Player of the year and Match day Best player awards create a Lot of Negativity and heated debate at times amongst members and supporters of Footy clubs which isn't What footy clubs should be about.
I do agree tho that Coaches and players would have a much better idea about who were the most influential and therefore most Valuable players in a game than the Umpires.

So who are the most influential players in the GSFL? Is Randall Follet more important to LC than Tim Follet or a fit Matt James? Eagleton more influential than Duffield? While Willunga has a number of 'vote getters' I don't think there is much debate that the most influential player in the side is David Hams (?). There has been comment on this forum that he should have got more than 4 mail medal votes in a 115 goal season but to be honest I don't expect him to go any where near winning Willunga's B&F either. How often do players who start outside the centre square win best and fairests or other individual awards? I'd be interested to hear of some examples.
Maybe the GSFLPA could award different types of players for their 'value' to the team. Best backman. Best tagger etc...

What you have to realise LF is that Victor may have paid for success in the 90s, but no different to many clubs in the GSFL especially the saints who spent a pultice to go nowhere (Mansell era) and to think Willunga isn't spending money goes to show how gullible you are. Many players at Willunga originated at Aldinga.
Bays are the same with the big names they have had over the past few years - Ottens, Rolfe, McLean, Jagodnik, West, Gigney, Dennis (all big money players and the club fininshed third). Saints poached 2 of them.
The Bays have done better in 2008 with the locals and there is a greater feel in the club, but with the right recrtuiting it pushes a side into premiership calcualtions. Imagine if the Bays had Rolfe tomorrow they would be certs.

Would have stayed for the A's but couldn't see myself staying at Willunga in s***t weather and watching a whole game of B Grade footy between Compass and McLarens.

LuvsFooty wrote:Thanks A Mum. I cant believe the boys (and 1 girl) keep getting up, we must be the smallest junior colts team in history! This week will be very tough. I must say the Willunga Oval (although it has a 45 degree slope) was in great nick and the umpiring was great. The 2 umpires, Cratey was one, really communicate with the kids which makes it a hell of a lot easier.
Speaking of ovals, I hear a whisper that some league officials were asking about the Goolwa Oval's availabilty on Saturday the 22nd of September. Interesting....... I know all the farmers at Compass love the rain, but they need it to stop for their ovals sake!

He did get reported did he?? That doesn't surprise me. The way the Strath coaches box and supporters behaved when the umpires came off the ground was disgraceful. Very poor sportsmanship.
Apart from the scenes that followed the match it was a great spectacle on Saturday with the Hawks coming from 2 or 3 goals down at the last change to come away with a gutsy 5 point win.
The highlight of the day for me was in the 3rd quarter when there was a scrimmage about 10m from the Strath goals and one of the Strath players dished out a handball to Duffield who was standing unmarked on the goal line and he shepherded it through thinking it was kicked to him. Just as it crossed the line he realised what he'd done and threw his hands over his face. Priceless.
