I've often wondered the same thing myself. What makes Adelaide a back water?
1 million people dominated by small town thinking.
Is Perth thought of as a back water? Similar scenario, aprox 1 million people concentrated into the city with not much population outside. But Perth is not thought of as a back water.
My own theory is that Perth is too far from anywhere to get too influenced by anything larger than itself.
Adelaide on the other hand is within a few hours drive of the east coast and the huge poluation there. Like a little guy standing next to a group of giants. So we sort of get bossed about a bit and rather than being like the major center for miles around (as is Perth) we are sort of an outpost to where the big things are happening on the east coast.
Affects the thinking IMO, perhaps we subconciously begin to accept that second best is okay.

Perth has alot more than 1 million people. Probably closer to the 2 million mark.

It must have grown a lot since I left Australia.
I don't think it was that long ago that Perth and Adelaide were about the same size. Yet the two cities had very different reputations regarding "backwater".

Any takers for Morris Iemma and his corrupt, incompetent government?

Seriously, apart from Dashing Don's decade, Adelaide has always been a staunchly parochial and conservative city...

Dunstan is the bloody reason we are a backwater, apart from very necessary social legislation the Dunstan decade sowed the seeds of today.
1. Shelved the MATS plan for an Adelaide wide freeway system
2. Sold most of the rail network to the commonwealth to balance the books due to his economic incompetance.
3. Do you realise in the Dunstan decade it was impossible to buy meat or petrol after 6pm, so beholden to the union movement he didn't dare make that social change.
4. Took the credit for the festival theatre when the previous liberal government initiated the project.
5. Proposed MONARTO as a satellite city - another debacle.

There is so much mythology about this bloke. Legalise homosexuality, introduce lotteries and extend hotel hours and you're a bloody hero. Unfortunately Mr Dunstan's successors are continuing in his magnificant legacy, Bannon nearly bankrupted the State, Mediocre Mike has put about 2kms of tram track in and plans to build a hospital on a contaminated site. When will people wake up!

I nearly forgot the genius Premier DD, wanted to build a huge SHALLOW dam at Chowilla near Renmark, this would have been the greatest envronmental disaster to ever happen in this state or country had it been built. He won an election on that issue.

LMFAO we cannot get our rail network here extended to outer suburbs and then we still F*CK up, when we get the job done. You know why there isn't anymore Waverly Park ask the Victorian Governments and the MCC. There was supposed to be a rail line to Waverly and they never did it. We have an Airport with no Rail line Sydney is moving more ahead than Melbourne is. Labour in the 80's F*cked Victoria Jeff just helped them even more.

I didn't agree with him at the time, but looking at what has happened to Adelaide since, he was probably right!
I also think the people who argued with Tom Playford at the time that the development that is now Elizabeth should have been based on Gawler and a gap maintained between it and Adelaide were probably right.

When Don Dunstan was No. 1 ticket holder at Norwood his Minister for Health Don Banfield used to grumble that he had been a member of Norwood Football club long before DD, and therefore should have that ticket.
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!
