Without wishing to sound detrimental to Ian Hanna, That bit of prose proves why Glenelg can be considered to be a better club than West Torrens. Weak clubs rely on sentiment and individual achievements to create their history. Strong clubs look back on team performances in grand finals to determine theirs....
What rubbish. Neither club had anything to play for, why not give a bloke like that some satisfaction? Both very unique situations. Your point would be valid if WT were playing for a spot in the 5, & played Scruff because he was 1 short of 200.

Missing my point Punky, I have no problems playing Ian Hanna in that scenario, and good on West Torrens for that, my point is people using sentiment and individualism to creat club culture "or reminisce on great pieces of play". Successful clubs draw on inspiration from achievement and deeds in important matches especially GFs.

Look at the posts from the majority of posters on this thread, the majority of great plays are in GFs or major round matches.

Surely in 1980 or 1978 for Aerie their may have been some great pieces of play to get Torrens into the finals that he can draw inspiration from.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Sorry old man, I wasn't around in those years. If you can't draw inspiration from something like I mentioned, what can you draw inspiration from? Scruff was risking a hell of a lot for that moment, much more than winning any Grand Final and to see that after having the number 1 on my guernsey growing up, was a special moment.

God knows what your point is with regards to Glenelg being a better club than Torrens. Four flags each and a better win-loss ratio for West Torrens proves who the better club is. Your club in the last 13 years has hardly been any better than West Torrens was for their last 13 years. Did your club ever have the highest membership in the league as Torrens did in 1963? It is a pleasure that Torrens is still alive in its present form as Woodville-West Torrens to continue kicking a club like yours when it's down. Not that this is the thread to argue that point...

I think the Scruff Hanna moment was an extremely special one, I was spewing I wasn't at that game as North had an important game that day.
Scruff actually broke his neck in my Uncle's pool at Gumeracha, an absolute top bloke.

I think "Rocky" may have done the main call of the grab and either Naley or David McKay threw in the unbelievable, for a while in our park footy marking contests back then we stopped calling out Modra and Ablett "SIMISTER" everytime!!!

Very disappointing that year for a person who doesnt like Norwood or Sturt winning flags. When have North ever stolen a flag like that. Theyve had plenty they couldve won and havnt

We finished the minor round top in 67,85,86 and 89 if we had won the flag it's not like we would have "pinched" it.
You could argue 45 was a chance being even with West Torrens when the bell went in the 1st and then they went and on won the flag . Would North have though? We'll never know. 73 ...well...what can you say?

1945 and 1967, North weren't even in the Grand Final. In order to "pinch" a premiership you need to play in the game first.

1989? You need more than 1 goal if you want to pinch a premiership :)

Im just watching a replay of the North v Sturt game and have seen the best passage of play.

Scubert 55m from Sturt goal, tackled, handpassed to Ryan Nye.
Ryan Nye kicks to Matt Campbell on the outer wing.
Campbell takes 2 bounces before being hemmed in on the boundary from No 50 for Sturt.
Matty Campbell handpasses the ball over the top of the Sturt lug to himself!
Takes 1 bounce and signals to Motlop to lead.\
Takes 2 more bounces, runs to 50 metres out and bombs long.
Motlop almost marks at the edge of the square, spills out to in front of the point post on the boundary.
Motlop runs and gathers the ball, has 2 Sturt players directly between himself and the goal and another closing from half back.
Motlop evades the tackle twice and by this time is on the boundary about 20m out from goal (and as you know Adelaide Oval has the tightest pockets in the game).
Motlop starts running out a bit, dodges and he's being tackled he checksides it straight through the middle.
I keep rewinding it and keep laughing my tits off, it is pure poetry and I've never seen an excitement machine in the SANFL like Motlop's last month than when D.Jarman was running around in 1990 for North.

That mark and winning goal will always hold fond memories with us Westies supporters because it was one back on Port. You can flog port by over 10 goals but beating them by under 2 goals well that is just special.

One of 2 times I saw Barrie Robran play live (growing up in the country most of my SANFL viewing was on TV)
Against Sturt, Robran with the brace on his knee dodges and weaves around 4 or 5 players and kicks a goal from the NW pocket boandry line, pure magic !

as a torrens supporter i would agree with Scruffs goal, another great moment was Kim dillions goal from the boundary line to beat Glenelg at thebby.

as for Eagles the WEED tackling patterson in the 1st qtr of the 93 grand final, ran him down when he was heading for goal, got him holding the ball and we ended up kicking a goal.

as a moment that torments me, there are 2. 1994 Grand Final. the entire second half. and in the 1991 Prelim final. 7 goals down to west adelaide, last 10 minutes, gary Haylock running inside 25m the full back Glen Goss from memory comes out from the goal square to apply pressure . Haylock kicks the goal and burns Scott Morphett in the goal square no one near him strandard on 99 goals for the year.

Only a deluded Glenelg supporter would think that, both have won 4 premiership and one of them from a hell of a lot less tries than the other, not to mention Torrens were involved in some wartime premierships tipping the argument in their favour as to who was the better out of two very ordinary clubs.
Throw into the equation that Torrens have won more premierships in other grades, have played Glenelg 161 times winning 91 of them, Glenelg have won 4 times as many wooden spoons and have missed the finals in more years than Torrens.
Torrens may have been a mediocre club but they're still a better club than Glenelg.

Glenelg much better 1970 on wards, but overall yeah Torrens probably better, although not much benefit for them now given they dont exist anymore.
