Ultimate Mix-Tape of All Time

Postby Plunge Penguin » Mon Dec 31, 2007 8:33 am

Hypothetical - you've been asked to make a mix tape, of 20 songs, that will best illustrate to people in 50 years time, what the music of the last 70 years was like. Can't have the same artist more than once, but otherwise no limits. What would you pick - bearing in mind it is to cover as many genres/styles/trends as possible?

It's a very hard one, but in no particular order:

- Strange Fruit - Billie Holliday
- I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles
- Hotel California - The Eagles
- Dancing Queen - ABBA
- Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen
- It's Too Late - Carole King
- Beat It - Michael Jackson
- Moondance - Van Morrison
- Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
- Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones
- Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
- Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran
- Crazy Frog (yes, yes, I know - but its supposed to illustrate trends good AND bad!)
- Dancing In The Street - Martha and The Vandellas
- My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (see Crazy Frog)
- Nutbush City Limits - Ike and Tina Turner
- China Girl - David Bowie
- Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
- Like A Virgin - Madonna
- Macarena - Los Del Rios

Over to the crew!

It's sad that the most recent songs are shite ones. Crazy Frog, Macarena...

I would bring in Thriller, at the expense of Beat it.

I think I would bring in Nirvana, Smells like teen spirit - defining song of the times, very apt for this list IMO. Probably drop out Macarena to make room.

I reckon it could do with one of the recent R&B/rap efforts in place of the Crazy Frog to represent current music trends

So how about "Gold Digger" by Kanye West instead? Or "where is the love" by the Black Eyed Peas? We should highlight the very best of each era and I don't think Crazy Frog represents musical excellence

It also seems biased towards 60s & 70s how about Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit) to represent the mid 90s grunge era? One of the 70s tracks could go maybe the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac (similar styles picking one would give us a taste of the late 70s)

Also how about Sex Pistols as the punk / new-wave era is missing? Also "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys is viewed as an all-time classic maybe Van Morisson could go?

Final thought - does Bill Haley deserve a gig for launching rock 'n roll?

I agree PAFC, I was thinking more of capturing the mood, not the quality of the music - certainly better songs on that album.

Magpiespower

I was just trying to pick a R&B style song to represent the R&B era of the last 5 years - I freely admit I am not a hip-hop/R&B expert by any stretch

On on ultimate mix-tape I'd prefer Gold Digger anyway
