Without going too much into it, I would expect some financial savvy people would find it easier to build wealth by investing elsewhere and using the ability to claim tax on investments and then rent the family home, rather than paying for inflated property prices and relatively high interest rates.

You’d still need to rent somewhere at overly inflated prices also.

Yes thats the decision that needs to be made I guess, which is the less of two evils... rent or mortgage

No different to leasing or buying a car.
Don’t you want to own it?

Driving home along Crittenden Road yesterday and a unit is up for rent, I stopped on the opposite side of the road and counted 16 people lined up to inspect it.

Geez, what a rip-off.
We pay $500pw for a nice 3 bed room house in a quiet leafy suburb near the Torrens 10 mins from town. Mind you it was $400pw when we moved in 8 years ago.

PS I take it back, that unit is less than a block away from Shapeshifter!

Kids could save $5k a year just by doing what we kid as kids. Take your lunch to work and don’t spend $150 a month on an iPhone 15 pro max when an iPhone 8 will do.

I’m with you.
Daily coffees, brand name clothes, yearly holidays(most overseas), every concert that comes, every sporting event, etc etc

Stop all that or at least limit it and you’ll have a deposit on a house.

We have 11 Uni kids at my work, out of those 11 there has been 7 that have gone overseas in the past 4 months. One has been overseas 3 times in 13 months

I encourage my kids to travel young and not have kids til you’re 30, I tell them how much kids suck the life and savings out of you so live your life first.

I cop some crap from them when I say it but they’re on the same page

Absolutely no issue with that LM as everyone is different and want different things in life.

But then kids can’t wonder why they don’t have a house deposit as they’ve spent $15-$20k on an overseas holiday. Most people can’t have both.

Shity area there though and on a main road. No thanks.
But yeah agreed about the affordability, my daughter earns almost as much as me and she's happy to share a house with others to save on costs.

Good luck getting that when you apply with 50-100 applicants...
