Like I said even if a batter has a bit of a weakness with the short ball how many teams/attacks start the innings bowling real short

How many times have you seen Starc and Hazelwood start an innings bowling majority short. Starc is always going to start seeing if he can get his ins winger to the right handers working regardless of who the batter is. Same with Hazelwood his always going to spend the first spell bowling that slightly back of a length and seeing if he can get some sidewards movement.

Maybe you don't open with a bloke who struggles against the short ball then? Bowlers at their quickest, ball the hardest, yeah?

Come on mate it's a strict embargo on opening bowlers using short pitched bowling they got to make it swing.

Every opening bowler loves it when an opening bat is just sitting on the front foot waiting for that fully...

Get with program! It's no longer and 80s 90s west Indies/Australia bounce-a-thon

Maybe a silly theory but wouldn't be the first one

Could Australia be hoping Smith is bounced often during the opening spells of bowling therefore the opposition is wasting the new ball and have the opening bowlers worn out quicker.

Off course there is no embargo but name one time in recent history you've seen the likes of Starc & Hazelwood, Anderson & Broad start a test with more than the odd bouncer.

The closest we have come in recent times would be Mitchell Johnson against England but even then like Starc generally he would spend the first spell seeing whether he could get the massive in-swinger (to the right handers) working. Once the shine came off then it was a full on short pitch barrage.

Even if a team does come out and try and bounce Smith, as mentioned above im sure the aussies would take that especially if his patient enough to sway out the way.

In all seriousness, if there is a perceived weakness in batsman technique any half decent opening bowler will exploit it.

So if there is a short ball weakness of Smith's you can bet your bottom dollar it will be tested early and often

For Smith i think his problems against the short ball have been more of a patience issue rather than a technique issue.

Due to his ability to whip one ball through mid wicket/mid on and then next time hit the exact same pitched ball straight down the ground or through cover/mid off teams have found it easier to cut the oval down by 180 degrees and stack 7-8 fielders in that space and play the averages......in turn drying his run scoring up.

At that point i think his lack of patience has led him to play the shot to balls that probably werent the right ones.

In all seriousness though you’re pretty much on the money. The tail cop far more short stuff than the genuine batsmen do these days.

How so? I thought they both lost ratings with the average punter
