One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that there is a lot of smokes & mirrors when it comes to football clubs and their finances. I know everytime the the Essendon one is released I have a chuckle as they do their level best to hide the truth

Where else would you argue the difference between surplus and profit?

Other than nerd club, of course.

I read a financial report from a SANFL club about 4 years ago that was so loaded I couldn’t believe they got away with it.

Not suggesting Port have done anything, it’s just being discussed in this thread

I was talking about the semantics of reporting a profit v a surplus, but you carry on getting offending by the nasty people picking on Port.

When the Port Magpies were winning premiership after premiership in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s I couldn’t tell you if they turned over a profit or not.
Didn’t care as it was all about winning premierships.
How things have changed!

Talking about profits and balance sheets over premierships now.

Could tell you a very good story about a club legend over a beer one day.

The announcement mentions net assets increasing from $17.1M in 2022 to $32.7M in 2023. The $30M Alberton redevelopment was funded by at least $23M of Federal & State government and AFL grants, plus the club received $5M above the base 2023 AFL distribution to clubs (only Gold Coast, GWS, Brisbane, North Melbourne and St Kilda received more in 2023).

How has the redevelopment been accounted for on the balance sheet? If that $30M has been accounted for, then basically the net assets are reflective of the capital grants provided to the club, but pure speculation on my part without sighting this and previous years financials (and only based on the media statement released today, no googling involved  ).

They’re not on their Pat Malone, but actually how sustainable is the club when you take out the welfare components?

Just had a look and (like every year) there is no financial report made public, so we just have to believe what they say. Majority of the clubs (and SANFL) release their full financials, not sure why Port don't.

Whats even funnier is when Port fans try to claim SANFL still owes them money

SANFL league was profitable no matter who won the flag is the reality.

Port wouldn’t have even been considered for an AFL licence without your relationship/record in the SANFL. It’s been a win/win relationship IMHO

Whatever hypothetical money earnt extra by the league due to Port has been repaid and spent.
