Having an Opening Round before Round 1 is easily and by miles the stupidest thing I've ever heard of in this competition.
And that doesn't even take into account the huge advantage 8 teams will get with a competitive game under their belt going into "Round 1".

The stupidest thing I've ever seen in the competition is the introduction of four umpires. That will continue to be the stupidest thing about the competition until they introduce five.

Outlawing the bump, 50m for moving sideways off the mark and dissent against the ump?

You could have 6 thousand umpires and it still wouldn't be as stupid as having an opening round before Round 1.

No.

Opening round is 4 games. Round 1 is 8 games.

The 8 sides who played in opening round get a bye between rounds 2 and 6 ( I think ).

Kind of feels like they are trying to replicate a mini gather round for the non-footballing states because they couldn't take gather round away from SA after the success of last year.

One of the strangest things I've ever heard of in any sporting comp.

The idea I think is right. The way they use them is wrong IMO.

If you had two umpires in each half, one on either side of the corridor. When the ball moves from one side of the ground, they move accordingly, effectively umpiring a quarter of the ground and removing the need to run 15km a game. That way they could see the inferences that us people in the crowd see - high tackles, throws etc that umpires are currently blindsided from. The way it is now, they just get in the way and make no difference to the interpretations. Pointless.
