What a Grand Final! Probably the best SANFLW GF to date.

It was tense. It was ferocious. It was not for the faint hearted. Both sides played their hearts out all game. South put the scoreboard pressure on in the first half, kicking the first 3 goals, but a late goal from Centrals in the second quarter kept them in the game.

The third quarter was dominated by Centrals, except on the scoreboard, where they kicked a team dodo (0.6) before a last second goal brought the margin back to 4 points at 3 quarter time.

It was clear this was going to be one hell of a last quarter, and South had the first punch with the first goal of the quarter. Centrals responded, and it was still under a goal the difference 6 minutes in to the last quarter.

The rest of the game was pretty much camped in Centrals forward half, as Centrals fought and fought and fought and tried to find a way to crack South’s defence, which has been stingier than Centrelink all season. But the discipline from South’s defence began to crack late in the game. First there was a free to Rosenzweig 35 out dead in front. Everyone thought this was going to be the game winner - even the men’s league players behind the goal had moved down to the fence ready to celebrate. She lined up, kicked it…and it hit the post!

You wondered if that was it and South would cling on for the Premiership. A couple of minutes later, another free. This time to Teague. With the clock passing 19 minutes, you knew this really was Centrals last chance. This was Teague’s chance to win it all for her club. I was hoping like hell she’d nail it through, but as we saw two minutes earlier, anything is possible. She starts lining up…

25 METRE PENALTY!!!!

Well that took any doubt out of the shot as she advanced to the goal square, then gave us all a brief scare by just slamming home the goal while the umpire was lining her up. By then, you knew the ball wouldn’t make it back to the centre in time, and it was party time for the Doggies as they win their first SANFLW premiership, and first premiership of any sort at the club since the men’s 2012 Reserves flag!

What a game!

While a lot of South supporters have, frankly, embarrassed themselves and their club, you can’t say the same about the club itself. They were gallant in defeat and their captain an incredibly classy speech in the post-game presentations, acknowledging the journey Centrals have been on in the SANFLW. She is a credit to her club.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

I dont usually watch womens but enjoyed the last quarter
I saw that final free from the front and thought OMG
Just saw it from a different angle. Giving away a 25m in the final minute of a GF - ouch

Well done Benny Hunt - He's worked hard to get where he is and is a ripper bloke. Well deserved :supz:

Makes a mockery of the SANFL men’s product

Hear hear.

Brianna (nee Wedding) Cleggett. To miss out on the prize by a bee's whisker and be as humble, stoic and generous as she was. Her speech was an honour to witness.

Well done to Shelby Smith, Best on Ground. She was right, we do have the best supporters, there in clamorous hordes.

Awesome atmosphere, great game by two deserving sides, either would have been fitting winners.

To the CDFC ladies, thanks for giving this long time 'Dogs fan a day at the footy I'll never forget. Club history. Congratulations, enjoy the moment, you've all earned it.

Shout out to the vocal end to enders and Charlotte Riggs fan club. :D

Good on the lads, the ladies have set the pace for them - all grades.

Had a bit of polite g'day with C. Gowans on the ground after the game. Reckon I caught a glimpse of two CDFC Captains (one past and one present) in a proud father-daughter moment about the same time.

Central District win 2023 Hostplus SANFLW League Premiership
from sanfl website

Central District 4.7 (31) d South Adelaide 4.4 (28)

Central District announced itself as a power of South Australian women’s football after a high-drama Hostplus SANFLW League grand final triumph over South Adelaide at Prospect Oval on Sunday.

Caitlen Teague kicked a goal in the dying seconds to claim a three-point victory for the Bulldogs in a thrilling, physical premiership decider.

The Bulldogs had trailed all game despite dominating the inside 50 count and the win adds another chapter to their historic ride to title glory.

Bulldogs captain Shelby Smith was named the medallist after inspiring her side with her typical toughness and tireless work ethic on the ball.

“There are a lot of emotions at the moment,” Bulldogs coach Ben Hunt said. “I had a couple of heart attacks in the last quarter so I’m still reviving from them, I’m still a little subdued at the moment.

“When Caitlen kicked that goal, we just went off in the box, hugging each other, it was a little crazy. There has been a lot of hard work and we had done it.”

It was a willing contest early, as expected with so much on the line, with both sides prepared to throw themselves into the fray.

The Bulldogs were dealt a massive blow just seven minutes into the contest when key ruck Georgia Avery had to be carried from the ground due to a leg injury.

Well drilled in their ability to set up a wall across half forward, the Panthers kept the Bulldogs pinned down in defence for lengthy periods.

And that constant pressure was rewarded after 15 minutes when Lucy Northcott marked in the goal square and kicked the goal.

The tackling pressure of the Panthers was relentless, especially in defence where they refused to allow the Bulldogs any space or time to operate.

Again, they were rewarded for the commitment when Melissa Anderson goalled 10 minutes into the second term. Jorja Hooper then toed the ball through for a goal to give the Panthers a commanding lead.

The Bulldogs moved the competition’s leading goalkicker Katelyn Rosenzweig into ruck and she created the side’s opening goal, bombing long for Charlotte Riggs to take a strong mark.

Camped deep in attack for much of the third term, the Bulldogs struggled to capitalise on the territory advantage. They added six behinds, before talented Jasmine Evans marked and goalled just seconds left in the quarter.

If the women can play the GF at suburban grounds then minor finals in the men's comp should be a lock, just look at Glenelg yesterday

Sadly i dont think the players want suburban finals.

Look at the State Game. The main reason that game was at the timeslot was due to the players wanting the opportunity to play on Adelaide Oval.

diddums, play suburban finals. dont need to be home finals, can be at neutral venues. state game and other finals with poor crowds at AO offer nothing to the competition. :D

Having been involved in the junior girls system for a few years, I did say that the 'new' generation of girls will be better than the 'current' generation. However, I didn't expect this, nor did one of the U18 girls I spoke to yesterday.

I wonder if the 18/23 combined side took on the SANFLW combined side, how they'd fare.

In saying that, the future is bright for the women's competition moving forward.
