[quote="blueandwhite"]Re Hunter..
this as an absolute bloody joke.
If you know of any gangly young 200cm ruckmen, send them to South and they will be ushered onto an afl list almost immediately. 4 bloody years in a row this has happened with a few weeks to commence the season...

2018 Keegan Brooksby (West Coast)
2019 Hayden McLean (Sydney), Michael Knoll (Sydney)
2020 Keegan Brooksby (Hawthorn)
2021 Paul Hunter

AFL clubs have 2 drafts to select players for the upcoming season back in early december. They have 6-7 scouts and team list managers et al to select players, then at the last f---g minute they decide they might just go and grab so and so from a state league club and put him on the rookie list as insurance. The player will then train his guts out 5 nights a week to play in some pissy b grade team in ahalf baked reserves comp that probably wont get off the ground any way' and never play an AFL game    . ffs!![/qu

Sure it is concerning, but the reality is that St Kilda do not have a shortage of ruckman. They already have 3-4 solid options on their list so unless they suspect someone like Ryder won't last the year then no reason to draft one. I think they are just having him train to take a look at him and get him familiar with the club with the view of drafting him in the June mid-season in the unlikely event one of their ruckman goes down.

Ryder 33 once the season begins and has had injuries here and there over the years, not sure I'd suggest its unlikely (Saints seemed to manage him pretty well last year, but reckon they know he's a risky proposition).

Everyone across the country with a state league interest knows the access AFL clubs have to lower tier players these days is ridiculous, but what can ya do .. Really feel for the Southernites if Hunter does indeed make a move.

Poses the question, to potentially counteract some level of damage from these drafts, should SANFL clubs be able to trade/loan players in-season?

This isn't the news we were hoping for after Monday night training Gazza.

I feel for South potentially losing Paul Hunter he was a great pick up for them last year. I enjoyed watching him play for the Panthers as I was a fan of him watching him play for the Crows reserves when he was on the Crows list and was disappointed the club delisted him without ever playing an AFL game for us.

The only positive for South fans in this is they should have plenty of big guys knocking on their door to play for them now knowing AFL scouts are watching the Panthers big men like hawks.

Just my 2 bobs worth of useless info. My contact at Centrals tells me that they have an internal trial tonight. He's at ground zero there. Tells me there are a lot of new faces there but I didn't ask who they were. He's happy how they are progressing.

Do we have 44 players to fill two teams?

I suppose the Eagles will have their scouts there.

I doubt it. The Menzel brothers signed with us.......who else have we grabbed? I haven't heard reports about how Daniel is progressing from his injury but given his history it would be a good result if he played a third of the season!! Might not be such a loss for Centrals.

You guys should focus on getting big Seb to pull the guernsey on again :) He's back and certainly has the ability to still play at the league level though of course won't really be match fit at this stage. Worth a crack though

Really?
We lost the Menzels, both injury-prone & hardly played for us anyway,
Jenner & Goodrem, at the twilight of their careers,
the others were just up to league standard,
We don't know how the new recruits will go yet either, so we can't pass judgement yet,

I pretty much agree with that; the only two important players I would say we have lost in addition to the Menzels are Isaya McKenzie and Ryan Falkenberg. That is taking nothing away from Alfie and Trent - they were amazing CDFC contributors, two of the best we have had in a long time, but as you said, Gazza, in the twilight of their career.
Cheers

True, I would place him in the same category as Alfie and Trent though - we knew his days were coming to an end.
I am a huge fan of Butch and thank him for how he selflessly decided to play for us last year when we were in dire need of forwards.
