What happens to that history with the merge/takeover?
That history was discarded years ago

Reynella huge winnings with juniors and lower grade seniors.

Is it true at 0/11 of the SD A-grade currently live south of Darlington?
If so, I'm not sure Reynella will necessarily pick any of them up.

what I am hearing is that many at saca do not believe this merger is appropriate but they will take it but expect it to be defeated by SD voting members.
nobody believes that having no premier club based south of glenelg oval is desirable. a greenfield site at darlington is unlikely, and years away at best.
saca will then use the defeated vote as the catalyst for bringing in a 2 division competition, saying if a merger proposal where both boards agree cannot get up then it never will.
the 2 divisions are likely to have a relocated team and a new team.

Think the board of Southern Districts are facing an uphill battle. Since the weekend they have turned off the comments section on social media posts.

It won't happen. SD will stay.
Adelaide merge with Sturt.
West Torrens/woodville.
Uni/ prospect.
Saca need to good grow some nurries and make it happen.

I don't see a point in 2 divisions.
Talent still spread over 13 teams with this proposal?

We had one of the best QC's in the state representing Port and us, when he made SACA realise they had no power to force a merger and was against their constitution, they backed down as they could not win. So did not actually get to court in the end.

If they cant force mergers, their only option is to form a new competition which Clubs have to apply to be a part of, best 8 to 10 Clubs win. The rest then decide their own future. Think Southerns and Adelaide are in bad financial state and trying to survive anyway they can.

If the merger doesn't happen, where does that leave Adelaide CC?
Anyone here have an affiliation with Sturt? What would their attitude be to merging with Adelaide (apart from each club not liking each other very much??).

When heard there was going to be a merger announcement and Adelaide was one of the Clubs, naturally thought it was with Sturt. Checked with someone I know high up at Sturt and they said it was not them, and no way in hell they would merge with Sturt. Similar to us and Woodville, makes sense geographically, but too much hatred between the Clubs makes it very tough!

it is thought that the talent will gravitate towards division 1. any contracted player will be required to play division 1 as determined by their employer.

They would only need 1 season of the two divisions.

As soon as it is set up, fund the top division $50k per club, and the bottom $10k per club. After one season the div 2 teams will all but fold.

Much easier with 2 divisions, those clubs with no base will go to Division 2. Decent clubs will stay. Mergers are ridiculous, no hope of ever working the way SACA do things. Still clubs out there who think they have some god-given right to stay as 1 identity. Call for applications and the best 8 stay in Division 1. The others become Division 2 clubs. Hopefully this happens in the next 4 weeks so people can begin planning where they want to play. Some of these clubs are struggling to function, no women's program, continued poor results in their juniors, no work in their zones, very little social function, no upgrades to their facilities, continued poor performances over the last 5 - 10 years, poor coaching profile and in most cases very shaky balance sheets.

Which ever way Saca go there's going to be losers.
If you're a country kid zoned to a div 2 club would you bother?
Will zones be enforced?
Anyone stuck in a div 2 team is no chance of a state cap.
A dominant player in div 2 will have to move to another club up the road.

Mergers are going to cause a lot of pain for the clubs involved.
But something has to give.
We don't produce enough national players and can't get anywhere near a shield.

I'd hate to be making a decision either way.
Good luck Saca!

Only Kensington, Sturt and Glenelg I would say tick all the boxes (Womens/Juniors) and perform consistently above average at 1st Grade Mens level. I would be very reluctant to merge any of these three clubs. West Torrens also ticks all the boxes, but doesn't have the consistency of performance that those three clubs have. Northern Districts and Southern District also tick the boxes, but have struggled to be properly competitive at senior level, only Prospect are worse.

Tea Tree Gully, University and Woodville have recently been strong performing clubs, but lack either a full junior or womens program.

Port Adelaide, East Torrens and Adelaide all are middle of the road senior clubs with no womens program and Port Adelaide struggle to fill their junior quota of teams.

Prospect have really struggled for a long time at senior level and also don't have a womens program.

In terms of mergers, geographically, the closest ovals to each other are:

1. Adelaide/Sturt - 4km
2. Uni/Prospect - 4.5km
3. Woodville/Port - 5.8km

If Adelaide merge with Southerns and plan to move further South - those other clubs merging makes sense to me.

If cutting to 8 teams - you'd look at East Torrens with TTG or Kensington and West Torrens/Woodville/Port a 3-way merger - and move Northern Districts further north.

Which clubs would survive/prosper without the SACA funding? Adelaide Uni? Anyone else?

Oh if only some unnamed board member at Adelaide many years ago had a more modern opinion of women's cricket they could have had the women's section of Sturt join them instead of being told to work the kitchen every Saturday night!
