So, now you are going to deny education and health care to all but the rich???

Completely the opposite

Why do you think education is so expensive?

The answer is because government (hecs) backs unlimited loans so universities charge at all and are not bound by supply/demand principles.

Get rid of hecs and universities would be forced to offer lower prices.

Confirms the craziness of Trump supporters... and why the world is a much better place today than it was last week.
Btw, I was referring to primary and secondary education, not even tertiary... but what Armchair said re tertiary education was so far from being correct, I am stunned.

You people really think universities don't set prices based on what they know students can borrow?

There is a degree of truth in what you say. However, even at the lowest possible cost, you would find a three year degree would cost somewhere in the vicinity of $50 000. Lecturers need to be paid, materials need to be purchased and consumed. There are many people who could afford nowhere near this for university. Are you going to deny a university education to them?

Also, will you deny primary and secondary education to about 30% of the population who could not afford it if it was only private education, with no government support?

Cheers

Had a long lunch yesterday with friends and some of the people were from various parts of the uni system

There was an interesting discussion about how unis have lost their core purpose and gone after the sugar shot of international students (my words)
I also learnt how their research programmes come into the equation for funding

One uni has put their massive capital investment programme on complete hold for the foreseeable future. (Others probably have as well but this was straight from the horses mouth)

There is no doubt that Covid has exposed some deep flaws in some companies business plans

The fact that Adelaide Uni have been advertising for local students is compelling

To some degree, it is a feather in the cap of SA universities that we have been able to attract so many foreign students in a global marketplace. However, yes, at the same time, it has created an incredible reliance on full-fee paying overseas students in order to generate the revenue for universities to operate.

Can I get an amen?

Absolute farce that private schools receive government funding and an even bigger disgrace that church's are happy to get involved in matters of the state but the state can't get involved with the fiscal matters of the church.

But that's another argument.
