You’ve gotta feel for Eagles but a fair verdict.

North the new Essendon(cheats) :/)

Someone nearly just cost their club a grand final.

Eags will be shattered but deep down they know they had it in their keeping and let it slip - regardless of the 19 man issue. Relinquishing a 7 odd goal lead in a prelim on a day when wind was not a factor surely close to a record?

I would take that punishment in a heatbeat. I am shattered. The eags should take it higher.

FINAL STATEMENT

The independent SANFL Tribunal has tonight upheld the result of Sunday’s SANFL Macca’s League Preliminary Final.

After hearing evidence from all parties involved, including submissions from both Woodville West Torrens Football Club and North Adelaide Football Club, former Supreme Court Judge the Hon. Michael David QC, as the Tribunal Chair, ruled to uphold the result while imposing a fine of $10,000 against North Adelaide for fielding 19 players for the first 3 minutes 39 seconds of the final quarter.

He also ordered that North Adelaide be penalised four premiership points for the 2019 season.

In accordance with the SANFL Constitution, Rules and Regulations the decision of the independent Tribunal is final.

Interestingly, it seems the official time that the extra player was on was 3 minutes 39 seconds. During that time, North scored 2 behinds (at 1 minute 26 seconds and 2 minutes 29 seconds). Ramsay's goal was scored at 3 minutes 49 seconds - it was a set shot, so one might argue the extra player contributed to the play that set it up. But if you want to argue that the score in the period that North had transgressed with the extra player should be wiped (as some have), then on that basis North would've still been adjudged the winner by 3 points.

SANFL could not have bought better media coverage for the GF. Nuffies who have not followed the SANFL all of a sudden have an opinion and will support Norwood.. Maybe those same nuffies will see how good SANFL footy is and watch some more rather than the packeged tripe the AFL are delivering..

Transcript The Hon Michael David QC
17th September 2018
Thank you very much. I have invited the media in because I think it is important they hear the actual words
of my decision.
In this most difficult matter I make it clear from the outset that I do not have the power to order a rematch
or annul the score. The range of penalties available are censure, a fine not exceeding $10,000, loss of
premiership points for next year and reversal of the result.
Having heard arguments and evidence I find that the North Adelaide Football Club was grossly negligent in
allowing for a period of some 3 and half minutes 19 men to be on the field during that time they scored 1
goal and 2 behinds and eventually won the match by 5 points. Their various explanations as to how this
came about were unsatisfactory and confusing; however, I find that the decision that they indulged in was
not deliberate. It was due to negligence. I have looked at the video of those minutes and it is almost
impossible having looked at it on a number of occasions to say whether that extra man affected the scoring
and therefore the results. It is impossible and I can say no more other than that it was a possibility that it
could have affected the result but I can say no more than that.
I am of the view that it would be unrealistic to expect the Woodville West Torrens Football Club through
their captain to ask for a count on the day and my decision should not factor in the fact that that was not
done. That is a very anachronistic law that really doesn’t apply today and has been overtaken by
technology, because there is no doubt that there were 19 men on the field and that a count would not be
necessary. To me a rematch would seem to be the most superficially appropriate penalty, but I have no
power to do so and would have of course caused potential prejudice to the Norwood Football Club who are
waiting to play the grand final.
Faced with this dilemma I am of the view that as this was not deliberate a reversal of the result is too savage
a penalty and the matter should be dealt with by way of fine and loss of premiership points for next year.
Sadly, this is of little consolation to the Woodville West Torrens Football Club. I fine the North Adelaide
Football Club the maximum amount of $10,000 because this was grossly negligent and by way of deterrence
and I dock them the loss of 4 premiership points for next season.
That is my reasons.

Start next season minus 2 points seems about right.

Whether it's the right or wrong decision, a decision has been made, I think it's great that the SANFL took so long to deliberate, they obviously took all things into consideration, listened to both sides of the story and came to a resolution.

As an Eagle supporter I'm a tad disappointed, disappointed that they couldn't get a runner to the captain for the first five minutes of the quarter, if they had of, it would've stemmed the flow and could have possibly been enough to stop the onslaught, apart from that, it had nothing to do with the other 11 unanswered goals.

Good luck North Adelaide in the big dance, massive turnaround for the club.

Some stupid old rule outweighs common sense. Wouldnt expect anything less SANFL.

If Norf had any decency they would contact the eagles and at least offfer to deduct the 8 points while they had an UNFAIR advantage.

It appears North still had 19 on the ground when Ramsay took the mark and during the time he was lining up for goal, that is when Almond discretely left the ground to bring the numbers back to 18.

Why? The Eagles has a golden opportunity last night to articulate to the tribunal the exact advantage North had gained from the extra player, and couldn’t do so.

The Eagles should focus on why they let the game slip from such a dominant position. Should never have lost a game 10 goals to 2 up in the third quarter.
