Western Australia and West Australia has always been pretty interchangeable, people of WA are referred to as both Western Australians and West Australians (and Sandgropers) , their newspaper is the West Australian for eg. The football comp has had several changes of names with both being used.
I assume it's because there's no mistaking Western Australia as everyone knows where it is but if you said Southern Australia it could mean a place in a few states.
