I see you're taking 2016 into account where he filled in as a lead ruckman, meanwhile as he's up the ground trying his guts out younger players established themselves in the back half.

Good call.

You have to admit that this year he has been used as a bit part player, whilst never really excelling in any role he was given. Thats usually not the best sign.

Absolutely, however, the other tall options on our list for the main part of the year were either backmen only ( Austin ), recovering from surgery ( Howard ) or only in their first year on the list ( Marshall ).

It's take the best part of a season for him to be ready. Options = limited.

Load of rubbish. Howard has been ready for months. Ditto Frampton. Is Marshall a dramatically different player now than 6 weeks ago?

Ken didn't want to because he is stubborn and wanted to back his structure in. He did the same thing in 2015 with Lobbe and Ryder when it clearly wasn't working.

It's one thing to argue that his methods are valid but its another to make shapes out of clouds to make excuses when it doesn't work.

"Load of rubbish"? How can you say it's a load of rubbish when you haven't seen either of them play at SANFL level? How can you possible say "they've been ready for months" when you don't see them at that level? You can't knock an educated (?) opinion with one that isn't, IMO.

Frampton has patches of matches where he's hard to find out there, he's young and developing and will play in 2018 I'm sure. Marshall looks very promising and is a natural forward who needed time to develop as this is his first year in the system. Howard has played predominantly in defence and not as a key forward.

You know you can watch SANFL without going to the game right? There is plenty of footage available plus the televised games. Update your thinking Booney, it's 2017. In addition, there are plenty of people that watch every minute live that have been screaming the same message. They're just not Hinkley and Port sycophants.

Plus, its just simple logic. If Marshall is ready for selection now (and Howard last week), then unless there is some sort of magical machine which develops players at a rapid rate, he would've been ready for the Richmond game or the Melbourne game too - both of which were infinitely winnable had we picked a side with one or two more key position players. Win both of those and all of a sudden we're 4th and playing at Adelaide Oval in a qualifying final.

Plus, it's proven and repeated Hinkley methodology. It's not just this year, but previous years too. He has made the same mistake of sticking to a poor structure with experienced players because he wants to back them in for three years in a row now. 2015, 2016 and 2017. All wasted (baring a minor miracle this year)

More of the point.

Dougal Howard was named in the best for the Magpies, twice, in APRIL of this year. He was named second best in JUNE. He has been playing well and in healthy physical shape for literally months. Forget the position, it doesn't matter. He is proven to be capable to play a role as a tall at AFL level - due to the fact that, you know, he did it in 2016. I think people forget that Howard has actually played AFL before this year and looked really good. Have people forgotten his goal after the siren vs the Bulldogs in 2016?

I watched the first SANFL showdown in April. Would've played him a week or so after that given Eddy dropped out.

I cant find consolidated SANFL stats anywhere. God they're a rubbish organisation. Cant be naffed going into individual games.

SWARM will be updated after the minor round beigey. Jacobs would still be in front however.
