Should Australia Day date be changed?

As I sit here drinking a baileys, playing back yard cricket while listening to AC/DC in my Barossa Rams rugby union singlet it's hard to argue that whether we like it or not the first fleet landing has had a major significance on all of our lives and has shaped every single one of us. For a lot us we would not be talking on SAFooty if it wasn't for the immigration of many countries to Australia

Whether we celebrate that on this day or not is an ongoing debate to which I'm really unsure of but the first fleet arriving is arguably the most significant and defining day in this countries history for good or bad

No biggie on the date but I'm dead against a flag change

Not quite sure why we have to have a union jack on our flag these days. But I like the blue and the southern cross

I love the current flag. Like it or not the Brits are a huge part of our history

Australians are an even bigger part of Australian history.

I think it's the ultimate act of subservience to have another country's flag on your own flag. We can remember the influence of the UK (and indeed of the many other nations from whom our antecedents migrated) without having another country's flag on top of ours.

Change the flag if/when we become a republic. No need to do it before hand.

I'm sure if we did become a republic 90% if the population would be in favour of removing the Union Jack. Leave it as is till then.

Concentrate on what we can and should be doing now and in the future instead of living in the past and blaming the people of today for something that happened hundreds of years ago - because it's not going to fix a bloody thing by moving it. Jan 26 will still come around every year and every year it'll continue to be remembered for the same reason, whether it's a recognised by a public holiday or not.

It makes you question the integrity of all these so called protesters against Australia Day - resorting to violence, in some cases, over something that has nothing to do with anybody living today but clearly don't care enough to fight or protest for equal rights, or to stop domestic violence in indigenous communities that still happens today.

Perhaps we should actually follow the Yanks for once - the holiday known as Columbus Day (the day he founded America) has been re-named to recognise Native Americans in a lot of states.

Ian McFarlane has suggested march 1st, as apparently that was the first date Australia began functioning under a national government.

Seems as good a day as any to me.

Interesting. There's an indigenous leader involved in politics in Fremantle who was saying similar things.
My feelings on the matter are guided by how the indigenous population feels about it. It doesn't affect me personally, but I can understand the argument they put forward.
If we were to poll just the indigenous population, I would say they'd return a majority sentiment that the date should be changed.
How would people feel about such a process being used to decide if we should change the date or not?
