He was thoroughly out - coached by Mattner today. Just did absolutely nothing in response to the spare Sturt defender in our backline all day that mopped up all the loose kicks forward and caused so much indecisiveness amongst our players causing us to hold it up and chip it sideways.

Then again, our players weren't prepared to push up fast when we had the ball in our possession and @%#!%# Ainger just couldn't be bothered presenting himself and making a contest.

But no, Godden is safe as houses, generally a good coach. Of course he will probably be doubting his own ability after 2 dismal losses so I guess the question will lie with him.[/quote]

time for more poaching from other clubs

Boyd got a lot of the ball but often didnt seem that effective with it, not sure if that is his fault or game plan, thought Rowntree and Poole and maybe Allmond tried hard but were ineffective, and not much after that. Chris Hall needs to be offered the captaincy if the twos.
With all due respect to Kirkwood, was good to see Steven get the medal and not the high profile, easy choice.

Fully agree with your assessment there.

Wundke has performed in both grand finals. Petrenko and Poole were also brilliant today. If all our players played with their endeavour we wouldn't have lost. I also thought Thompson did reasonably well even if Beard kicked 3 goals.

Too many of our players chose the wrong time to have poor matches though when you apply pressure it really sorts out those who thrive and those who wilt. Boyd and O'brien got heaps of the ball but were mostly ineffective and the latter was a bit soft at times. I don't know what the hell happened to Hall today. Just non-existent. Something has got to be done about Ainger. Can't take up that much of the salary cap and be so unreliable. Rowntree just should have been put on ice until next season. It's obvious he isn't match-fit and has been a non-performer in all his 5 or so games he has played for us this season. McGregor was just off all day.

Sad to have Jarrad's last game for the club end like this. With his exit, it feels like the end of an era of a group of solid players for us over a long period (e.g. Colvile, Cicca, Treeby, McKenzie etc). Who will be the next group of midfielders to stand up and serve our club over a 10 year period.

Most disappointing thing about today is that the choker tag we worked so hard to overcome after finally beating Centrals is now well and truly fastened to our neck once more. Every single team that comes up against us in a future Grand Finals, no matter how dominant we have been over a season, now firmly knows that if they apply the pressure to us that we will be beaten.

Enjoy the win Sturt. Worthy winners and you simply were the better team on the day. Great crowd, great atmosphere.

What about Riddler? He was in the coaches box!

Congrats to Sturt.

Crowd was OK, but not great considering Sturt's following.

Thought there was actually a reasonable turn-out of eagles supporters today. Obviously dwarfed by the Sturt contingent though. Hypothetically, if the eagles hadn't made it and say, a norwood had, would the crowd have reached 40,000 today?

Norwood v Sturt would push 40,000

Sure would have, if Norwood brought and army of at least 18k+ fans. (or 10k more than Eagles)

TBH I thought we'd see only 25k today ~ 6k Eagles, 17k Sturt and 2k neutrals.
At a guess seems like we got around 7-9k Eagles, 18-21k Sturt and 2-3k neutrals.

Up the 7-9k Eagles fans to 17-19k Norwood (Or the other big draw-cards of North, Glenelg, Centrals or Port[of old]) and 40k might have happened.....

Not bad for a league screwed over by the interlopers, bad club directors etc. And the flow on lack of interest of many despondent fans :(

Thank god Sturt saved the SANFL in 2016. Small credit to the umpires last week too, and Centrals and South ;)

Seeing 2 years back we got 38k, 30k is disappointing with Sturt in, replacing West and only getting 5k more?

Yep, I'd agree with your.estimate of the crowd division there Blues2002. I thought perhaps 8,000 Eagles supporters.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

It's not as common as other types of free kick because it happens less, but it's definitely actively policed

Wasn't actively policed *properly* today - that was an extremely bad decision.

If it occurred when I think it did an Eagles player had been caught plumb HTB in full view of the umpire who waived it on, so justice prevailed.

I agree Jimmy. in 2002 we were probably expecting to at least play finals. This year we were completely written off and given no chance.
