Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Getaway

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are back with a new album, The Getaway.
The Chilis have had plenty of detractors over their lengthy career, particularly as a result of some of their more recent bloated offerings (I'm looking at you, Stadium Arcadium), and they're sure to gain many more with this essentially inoffensive release.
Title track The Getaway starts with a dreamy-synth-based sound, setting out the stall for this album.
Maybe the Chilis have changed with time, and who can blame them after a career spanning more than 30 years and various tragedies and blow-ups, but this new sound feels like a band searching for relevance whilst filling in time playing oldies revue shows.
You just want one song, one song, to test the sensibilities of the listeners and press the envelope but it never comes.
The funk which made RHCP so influential, fun and often confronting takes a back seat and is almost an after thought in the opening title track – the album drifts into Dark Necessities, and you barely even notice that it's a new song.
It is only on We Turn Red, track three, that the band's traditional bass-heavy sound and wonky funk-rap lyrics really come to the fore.
Go Robot sounds like the Chili's spent an entire summer listening to Daft Punk's Get Lucky and chucked in some early 90s acid-drenched rave riffs to complete the mix. It's just...nothing.
String and piano orchestral-type arrangements add further layers to the unexpected tenor of the Chili's latest work, while The Getaway even feature's female backing vocals, as well as Elton John playing piano on Sick Love.
Reginald Dwight is credited as having played on only one song, but his piano-poking fingers are all over this work, or so it seems.
This is not to say that The Getaway is bad (or, for that matter, good), it's just different to the adrenaline-and-testosterone-filled work that propelled the Funky Monks into the musical stratosphere.
Whatever, The Getaway is, though, it's still better than 2011's I'm With You – make of that what you will.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

George Formby, I was listening to a story where the Queen wanted to be president of the George Formby Society but was told she was too important. I downloaded a few songs and I loved them.

I'd forgotten about that.

I was more thinking this: 'I'm forever near a stereo saying, 'What the **** is this garbage?' And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.' - Nick Cave.

Great quote!

Even though now they're just mediocre radio friendly elevator music I still rate Blood Sugar Sex Majik and IMO the unfairly maligned One Hot Minute.

I love both of those albums.
Anything after that is rubbish - they went from being agitators to radio friendly pap after OHM.

Well...there was Junkyard.
But, yeah, you're so far from right there.
I can understand why some people are deterred by the earlier angsty stuff, but he is definitely among Australia's best ever songwriters.

I know who I'd rather be front row for, but that's personal opinion and that's why there's so many forms of music.

I can understand you'd want to be front of stage for RHCP over Nick Cave.
But...we weren't discussing that. You said his music was rubbish. You might not like his music, but it's not rubbish.

No, no. I didn't say his music was rubbish, I said he can't call other people's music garbage.

Uriah Heep; Demons and Wizards, and Magician's Birthday.
Brilliant albums.

Yes he can. Anyone who had a role in the Birthday Party can. And with RHCP he is spot on. Radio friendly alternative musak.

Agreed.

RHCP has become a very 'safe' band.

I like the majority of the guitar-driven music I listen to to have a bit of 'meat' to it.
Politicians kissing babies for good luck,
TV preachers sell salvation for a buck.

The world's worst murderers were those who saw the light.
