Save the Tigers

All discussions to do with the SANFL

The AFL teams are the only reason our competition and clubs still exist. They bring in what, $20 mill a year through the Adelaide Oval deal? most SANFL games are lucky to get more than 100 people turn up?

We need to go back to grass roots to survive, stop paying interstate players big money, stop trying to be the second best league in Australia, just live within our means.

Save the Tigers

The SANFL is dying a slow painful death.. Fact remains regardless of reserves sides or not, the interest in the comp from the next generation just isn't there period.

Kids/teenagers if they're interested in footy are either involved at club level or they're home watching the AFL if not at an AFL game.

Harsh reality, but grass roots footy (SFL, SAAFL, HFL) probably has a greater interest and following amongst the younger generation.

This post sums it up perfectly.

'Grass roots' footy is real local footy, it's where kids play club footy, families go along, dads and mums chat, hang around to watch the big boys later, have another beer and a bbq etc. fact is these clubs are not sanfl clubs, it's saafl or country leagues. This is a regular weekend for many families instead of heading to the SANFL.

I'm not saying this because it's what i do (my 11 yr old hates footy and loves soccer, there lies another problem with the sanfl)

Maybe the sanfl needs a junior program??? Get 5-13 Yr olds wearing the Norwood, Sturt, North guernsey again, aspiring to play SANFL from a young age?

Us 40+ folk are a dying breed. I see a hell of a lot more kids wearing saafl tops than sanfl, the only ones sprucing sanfl gear in public are those who are the children of us 40+ who have indoctrinated our children as our parents did to us. Unfortunately many of us left the competition years ago and are continually leaving.

Another point I liked above about the save the Tigers video was that it was clearly aimed at the 'hey day'.... Old footage of when Glenelg and the sanfl was thriving, it's clearly aimed at the 40+ again, there is nothing there about the current generation, no interviews with younger ex players nothing to entice the 25 yr old to put in $10

It was very noticeably at how the entire video was aimed at the golden oldies!!

If I was asking for money I'd aim it at the 'golden oldies' too, and every time. After all they are usually the ones with disposable income.

I think the average is around 2 thousand plus at sanfl games this season.

The SANFL is important to footy in this state it just needs to be run better and promoted better.

I like the idea of more junior programs to increase more younger people's involvement with the clubs but this will cost money but think it would be worth it in the long run.

Pre reserves we were in a position to FIGHT this bullshit!
Since then crowds have fallen dramatically.
I'm only on my mobile, so it's hard to research but a quick search of this site produced the following figures posted by Spelly, there figures show crowds up to the second week of May:
1997: 3957 (24 matches, to Rd 7)
1998: 4132 (27, Rd 7)
1999: 3711 (27, Rd 7)
2000: 3296 (39, Rd 10)
2001: 4005 (27, Rd 7)
2002: 3761 (27, Rd 7)
2003: 3306 (27, Rd 7)
2004: 3589 (23, Rd 6)
2005: 3241 (27, Rd 7)
2006: 3256 (27, Rd 7)
2007: 3262 (23, Rd 6)
2008: 3672 (28, Rd 7)
2009: 3173 (28, Rd 7)
2010: 3580 (28, Rd 7)
2011: 3639 (23, Rd 6)
2012: 3286 (30, Rd 8)
2013: 3407 (24, Rd 6)
2014: 3357 (25, Rd 6)
2015: 2637 (27, Rd 6)

Well **** me, look at the decline post reserves! I know the crowds have since fallen more.
We predicted this! We knew it would happen! The ONLY dissenters from this opinion on this forum were handfuls of Crows/Power fans pushing their club's agenda.
Now it's happened I'm now reading hogwash that ee have to lower our standards?
The first thing we must do is kick the bloody reserve out! No good going into battle with a bad appendix. We'll still have to fight for our survival, but we can't do it carrying such a horrible handicap.
I'd much rather the ravens folded than Glenelg.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Because fans are not interested in going to to watch a comp that is so compromised. All clubs are in the same boat.
I know plenty of Norwood supporters who have stopped going since the reserve teams entered and personally my interest is at an all time low and my financial supports of the club has been cut from thousands a year to a couple hundred.

The AFL clubs could build their own stadium. Good luck with that

Thanks Jim.
There is a real lack of understanding about what's happening in the SANFL amongst non SANFL crowds. I listened to some well meaning suggestions on mmm this morning about how the SANFL can be fixed. KG thinks it's dead, some callers reckoned clubs need to put on meals, or players need to spend more time hanging the clubs. I had my 5 yo in the car with me and I had weekend things to take him to, I couldn't call in, but I wished they'd at least ACKNOWLEDGE there's a problem with the reserves being in.
AFL supporters looking in from the outside have no idea about the problems facing SANFL clubs, or the feeling of SANFL fans. Perhaps if we educate them there might be some hope, but in any case, the first goal should be to get the reserves out.

One by one the SANFL clubs will be falling over due to lack of finances until it is just the intruders to play each other every week. Then channel seven will be pleased (they more often than not broadcast a Power or Crows game) and the rest of us will get back to gardening or something else to do. The crowds have diminished due to lack of interest in a compromised competition and gradually the supporters from the golden years have passed away and are not replaced by the younger generation who prefer to play games on their electronic gadgets and/or SOCCER

lol. You seriously can't see how much of a cop-out that is?

The competition is no more compromised now than when you had AFL players running around in every SANFL team. Putting them all together at Port and the Ravens has not created 2 teams that dominate the comp which was the big fear initially.

People just aren't interested anymore because it's a poor product. 4 games a week, hardly ever see a nail-biting finish or even a close contest. A bye every second week. Yawn.

Rubbish.
People don't want to see a side capped at $300k compete against a side worth 10 times the ammount. Stats have proven that when the AFL sides are close to full strength they are close to unbeatable.
There is no denying that crowds have left in droves because of it.
I've always maintained I'll stay until the day a reserves side wins it, once that day happens I'm done for good like many others

What does the introduction of the Crows reserves have to do with Glenelgs declining crowds?

Absolutely nothing but some people just ain't that bright unfortunately

What part of "People will NOT attend whilst the AFL sides are in" do you not get?
Plenty of supporters warned their club they would leave if they were voted in and guess what has happened
