I don't rate Ballance and his tekkers are non existent.

Just quietly though would take his test average of 47.76.

Before the Ashes started his average was well above 50.

yep and an average of 50.52 at first class level.

I don't think crickets a sport where you can be terrible and fluke an average of over 50.

i think its more of a case where he is a solid test player against the middle of the road nations but doesnt have the ability against the very good sides.

Also, I don't remember his technique being as dreadful as it is now when he debuted against Australia in Sydney??

I've said this earlier but the number one problem England has is mindset. Deep down, they don't believe they can win. When they make the right noises and dare to play attacking cricket they can worry Australia in their own conditions. As soon as things go against them Captain Cook goes on the defensive and as in Aliens it's GAME OVER MAN GAME OVER.

The Ashes turned when Steve Smith had two slips and four on the offiside in front of the wicket. I started dancing when I saw that.

A few years back I played a game where we won the toss and batted, the captain decided to elevate himself to first drop, the regular first dropped off seen him padding up and said "You batting at 4 mate"
"Na, 3, you can go down a spot"
The dude was pretty pissed but the captain thought he was doing him a favour though.

"Oh well, it's only an extra ball I'll have to wait" the lad replied.

Funny enough, the skipper got a goldie.

I would have batted the **** at 11 if said that to me.

I think you can begin to decipher whether someone is up to it or not by 14 tests.

Only fools underestimate their opponents, it's probably why we won the 2nd test.

Dropping a catch was on par with wetting your pants, there's no place to hide out on the field when you put one down, you were open to hearing an array of stupid noises and insults.

Steve Smith was more or less selected as an allrounder
Almost half his innings with the 32 average was when he batted 7-8-9
Pretty hard to average 50+ when you bat that low so often
So to average 32 is not being a dud , what more can you expect from the then allrounder
Smith only played in 4 tests where he batted top 6 , perhaps better to go with how he batted in those spots
He did bat modestly at 6 , but was still burdened with the leg spinning allrounder status
When he bats top 5 then and now , he has an awesome record

To compare Bairstow with Smith is a poor comparism
