Last I heard his knee damage wasn't as bad as first thought, obviously that changed again.

Great cricketer.

Settles our pace attack then.

Feared that it was only one scan away from retirement. Shame it took a standoff from SACA for Ryan to reach his full potential.

Tour match vs Essex

Australia 2nd innings
221

Essex 2nd innings
200
Hazelwood 4/42
Starc 3/26

Australia win by 169 runs.

So our bowling attack is settled after Harris retiring. Johnson, Hazelwood, Starc and Lyon.

Now it's up to whether the selectors go with Shaun Marsh or Voges at number 5 and Mitch Marsh or Watson at number 6.

before the start of this tour i would have said Voges and Watson but I am definitely leaning towards the Marsh Brothers.

Having said that they may just keep shaun out of the team as he is probably going to be the next opener

Losing Harris is a shame. Didn't have the length of career to be considered a great IMHO, but what he produced in that short time was up there with the likes of McGrath. It does settle the bowling attack though so all the bowlers can prepare without competing and it gives Cummins a chance to get in the group a bit more. I'm a tad dissappointed Jackson Bird isn't the replacement. To me he's the most similar to Harris, 28 and averages 23 in first class cricket. Not sure whether he's injured or not but if Starc/Johnson/Hazlewood aren't getting the job done I'd go with someone who offers something different. Bird would, but Cummins would bowl reasonably similar to at least Starc (albeit from the other side of the wicket).

Batting wise, Voges at 5 for me. More of a natural middle order player than Shaun Marsh and didn't put a foot wrong when given the chance. I think if a guy performs you have to stick with him and send the message that performances will be rewarded. Chopping and changing for no reason never helps. #6 is tough. M Marsh seems in better form right now but I still think Watson's got more class. Bowling wise I think the only time you really go for the 5th bowler is when the main 4 aren't getting the results. In that scenario you want someone who offers some variety. To me, that's Watson. I also think Watson's slip fielding gives another edge. Having a first slip that has worked with the keeper and second slip a lot just makes that bit of difference in the field.

Good post Grahan, agree with it all except for Jackson Bird offering more variety than Cummins - Cummins and Starc might be similar, but Bird and Hazelwood would be like-for-like in the selectors eyes IMO.

Good post

Whilst Bird might be slightly stiff to miss out on the squad, Cummins has that raw pace which will unsettle anyone, even when he isnt bowling well.

Im pretty sure siddle is touring with the group too, so he would be the replacement for Hazelwood as the stock bowler

I guess I imagine Bird getting more movement in the air and Hazlewood more off the deck. If the Poms aren't struggling against Starc and Johnson, not sure Cummins will give them more trouble.

Yeah, Siddle is there but I just don't think he's dangerous anymore. I don't think we need a bloke to bowl 20 overs with the aim of basically not getting flogged around if we've got an all rounder. If Siddle plays, we go with the best bat at 6 and stuff the bowling. Which may well not be a bad course but are there better bats around than the all rounders? Not sure there are.

Jackson Bird was the first name that came to my head when thinking about who was to replace Harris, always been a fan of him and would love for the selectors to get him into the test squad more in the future.

I doubt Cummins will get a chance to play a test but I just don't like him as a test match bowler, too erratic IMO.

Siddle is done I reckon, can't see him getting back into the side, doesn't have enough attributes/weapons to consistently take wickets like our other quicks now have.

Pattinson if fit would of probably been on tour but he just can't stay on the park!

And also, I am anti-Watson now but I sort of forgot about him being our 1st slip! If he doesn't play who gets 1st slip? Smith would be my first option? Or Marsh if he plays? Is Voges a natural slipper?
