SANFL fixture is a joke, why so many byes?

Postby VALE PARK » Tue Jan 20, 2015 10:16 am

Surely we are here to play football during the footy season.
In seasons gone by we had no byes except perhaps to play state game.
With interchange players nowadays, surely we want footy every week.
What has the SANFL comp got to do with the AFL?
Sanderson and the crows forced the SANFL to accept the 2 extra teams ,
So now we have a crazy 1A round in the reserves before the season starts.
So then why do the Power have SANFL have a reserves side?
Shades of Monty Python to me.

Every team had 3 byes before crows and power reserves came in to comp.

Yes, but we still had 21 proper SANFL games every year. Now we have 14.

Wasnt 1990 before 2014?
I don't remember 3 byes in a season in most seasons before 2014.

There were only byes introduced because of an odd amount of teams in a relatively small part of the leagues history. No need to have them if an even amount of teams are in the comp.
Its a joke.

yep should have stated in a 9 team comp. Does seem odd that in a 10 team comp we have so many byes.

also one of the alleged "advantages" of introducing teh afl reserves was to return to ten teams and "get rid of the bye". just add it to the rest of the supposed positives that have all turned out to be false

1 bye per team is "so many"? Or did you get to round 1 and didn't look any further? Seems fine to me to avoid too many games over Easter and if you do that, got to be another weekend where the byes even out. Of course, they could have done a split round to avoid using the word bye just to make it look better for some people.

Yep, besides getting a couple of chances to abuse Crows wankers less weeks of no footy was the only positive I was looking forward to and its worse than before now!

1 bye and 2 split rounds per club. Plus a week off for the state game.

Without these weeks off the season would be finishing in August, so are added to pad out the season I'd imagine.

14 genuine games makes for a pretty light-on season.

Have 22 rounds, if you finish in the bottom 5 you play the 4 other teams in the bottom 5 three times, same in regard to top 5 clubs. Piss off any byes or split rounds, can the state match. All games on Fridays or Saturdays.
Crowds, revenue and interest in the comp rises at least 20%.
You're welcome SANFL.
Even better, piss off the Crows and Power, 21 rounds, play each team 3 times.

Graham,yes 18 games played per team over 19 rounds,BUT,
I count 22 Saturday's between the first and last round.
To me that is 4 Saturday's no footy for my club,or am I missing something?
A fair bit of lost revenue and enjoyment lost for me and many!

They're not 'byes'.
A bye can only take place in a competition in which there is an odd number of teams.
This situation is a series of split round (where a the round is played over two weekends), or weekends off (where no teams play). But they are not byes.
Just to be pedantic about terminology.

semantics

both result in a team not playing on a particular weekend. while they have different reasons for occuring, the result is the same. those that would normally go to the footy instead have to stay home and (god forbid) spend time with the wife/family

the farcical round 1 is the worst of the lot. nothing like starting the season wiht a whimper.......

This is what should happen, Port people on Facebook and Adelaide Now seem to think they are being held back by playing in the SANFL and want to leave and play in the VFL anyway. Hopefully sooner then later but that would require the SANFL to have some balls and actually stand up to them in regards to teams they field in our league and the funds from Adelaide Oval. [-o<
