I'd say Centrals TV ad is a winner all round !!

The one on channel 9, that has nothing to do with Crows or Port?

Pretty sure this is an open and shut case of confirmation bias, whatever that is.

At least two of your self claimed incontrovertible positive points are opinion not fact and the two that are facts do little if anything to help the eight SANFL clubs.

Who, might I remind, actually form the competition not two clubs from another league.

So apart from the showdown there has been a drop off of around 40%

I can only put it down to the novelty factor as the weather hasn't been that bad and if anything the Crows performances have picked up as the year goes on.

Bodes well for the future then I suppose

- West will have a drop
- North & Central need some good numbers for last 2 games to avoid a drop
- Norwood need OK turnout last 2 games to avoid a drop
- Eagles, Port & South will have an increase on 2013, they are just short of figures currently
- Sturt and Glenelg have already passed 2013 figure with games still to play

Of the 9 clubs with regular home games I think 6-7 will have an increase 2-3 will have a drop
Last year - only 3 clubs (North Port & West) had a rise, the other 6 had a drop
In 2012 - 8 clubs had a drop, only the Eagles had an increase

I have the league needing another 18,894 to match last years total minor round figure
with 15 games left that is just 1,260 per game.

They will probably just fall short of 2012 figure needing another 42,637 per game
or 2,842 per match.

Thanks Phil

Would be interested on how crowds stack up after taking out the Crows games which are the major dynamic chucked in this year i.e. free to get in, honeymoon period etc

I've asked this before and pretty sure I didn't get a response but I think a true reflection on the state of the league would be membership figures 2014 v 2013. Anyone have them?

Thanks for that. Interesting stats.

Can we compare to other teams average over the same period? (Ie to account for weather etc)

Does seem a bit concerning that there is that much of a dropoff

There would almost always be a drop off when it turns crappy weather in winter, regardless of who is playing.

The numbers don't lie obviously, but it is definitely a different feel at the SANFL this year for me and a different atmosphere. Some games feel like the old times (last quarter vs Norwood at Woodville and the game against Sturt at Unley). The Crows games especially have a weird feeling. Plenty of people watching, but not a part of it.

There are different aspects of the SANFL that when all brought together make it a great "product". Some of those aspects have been taken away with the AFL Reserves entry and the zone change. Some have been taken away with the growth of the AFL competition in the last 5 or so years. Some have been taken away/added with the game style and governance of the game. Some of those aspects will always be there regardless of who plays in the competition. For me, I am finding out I need all of those aspects to want to buy a membership and season ticket and want to go every week.

This time in SANFL history isn't the first time significant aspects of the competition have changed or will change and people will drop off or add on and the competition and clubs will likely/hopefully go on. Just with different people.

At least 21 kids per side, plus parents/family (at least one per kid), coaches, umpires.... could easily be many more than that depending on the number of teams in the carnival...

Im not sure that the types of memberships are the same though. For instance I think this year a few clubs have introduced 3 game memberships which adds to a clubs' tally but doesn't introduce any/much new income (none if those supporters would have paid to attend those games anyway).

I try not to get drawn into this argument these days because it seems pointless, with each person arguing in favour of their allegiance, but I will say that I fear for the future of the comp still and imho 1 season is probably too short a timeframe to make definitive assessments. Although club financials at seasons end could make interesting reading.

Heard Rowe on 5aa say that the league will be sending out a statement soon in regards to changes for the afl reserves side for 2015.

- Can't sign anyone over 23
- Can only sign one year contracts
- Can't recruit interstate players

I wonder if this means they have to get rid of players or they just can't sign anymore players over 23, not sure what else was mentioned only caught the end of it.

All part of the AFLSA push to make the SANFL an under 23 feeder comp for the AFL.

I have been posting this thought for a couple of years and I truly believe AFL head office would love nothing more than to see all the state league completely change to this way

Yep. All roads lead to the AFL. Consideration and care could have been taken in order for roads to still lead to the AFL AND still preserve the State leagues as strong independent competitions, in particular the WAFL and SANFL. However, nothing is more important than the almighty dollar and the SANFL has been swallowed whole.

They needed an Under 21 National competition that combines as the AFL Reserves, keeping those Under 21 players in their home state where possible with links to their local clubs. Scrap the Rookie list.

Ideally they'd have no more than 16 teams in the AFL - 18 is too many.

Then every player that is not aged over 21 and is not on an AFL list can play in a proper Men's State League competition.

Instead they think of the State Leagues as feeder leagues. They have spent heaps on the NEAFL, that they could spend on a National U21 Reserves comp.

They want the AFL, then they want all the State League competitions as strong as each other as feeders for mature age players and developers of the youth.

The SA Football Commission has done nothing to prevent this happening. Blinded by the Adelaide Oval lights and ignoring the key guiding principle they themselves planted when deciding the future of the league last season.
