The RRP for a Holden Calais which might be the equivalent model of a Prem, is $45k, which is $20k less than the equivalent in today's salary terms?

And I'm still young in 2014! ... At least I will have been when I'm looking back from 2024.
(I was 24 in 1967 and so 32 in 1975.)

Yes, you are probably right about the Calais, and they have a lot more features that the Premier had. So they have gotten cheaper in relative terms - just not as much so as the overseas competition.

By the way I traded the Premier in on a Bathurst Monaro HK 327 in early 1969 and got all my money back.
(IIRC the Monaro was $3700 odd.)

I would have thought Australian manufacturing started dying the day a cheap reliable Japanese made car hit the showroom floor.

Yes that was the very beginning. I think the start of it was the Isuzu Bellet in the late 1960s - the first really popular Japanese car.
Dropping the tariff barriers probably just hastened the inevitable process.

My first new Japanese car was a 1975 Datsun 260Z - I'd picked up a second-hand Datsun Fairlady 2 litre cheap a year or two as a second car.
Then when my first wife and I parted in 1975 she took the Monaro and I traded the Fairlady on the 260Z.

They have significant economies of scale advantages that we don't get, and their car industry is still shot.

hmmm -

When Manager of Opposition Business Julia Gillard however attempted to mimic exactly the exchange of 25 May by moving the motion "that that snivelling grub over there be not further heard"[4] against Abbott on a health legislation amendment, and then stating that "If I have offended grubs, I withdraw unconditionally", the Speaker asked Gillard to withdraw "without reservation". Gillard responded that "in accordance with your ruling yesterday, I have withdrawn effectively", but the Speaker then said that "I have no option...but to name the member", and subsequently by motion from Abbott, Gillard was removed from the House for 24 hours.

do as we say, not as we do hey ?

I really hope the speaker had a stern talking too... Gillard nearly saved the Australian people from this joke of a prime minister... That may have been her best work
