Terrible concept, it basically says, if you have the best 2 country midfielders in the state, who both want to get selected for zone (and potentially for State Country) that only one of them will get selected.

It wouldn't be an issue if Nobby and his mates just had the bye on Zone weekend not a weekend associated with netball that had no bearing of footy at all!

Well it's Zone weekend and given there are two clubs with players suspended due to to being unavailable for zone selection I thought it might be interesting to post the BLG players in the association squad and their current position in the Barracker Player of the Year leaderboard. This is voted on by coaches with each coach giving 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 votes so a maximum of 10 votes per player per game.

After 9 games- (players selected)
Blakemore 23 votes… 14th on leaderboard…polled in 3 games.
Walton 15 votes… 27th … polled in 4 games
Bissett 12 votes… 35th … polled in 2 games
Rusca 11 votes… 38th …polled in 2 games
Burgess 10 votes… 42nd … polled in 3 games
O’Brien 9 votes… 46th … polled in 1 game
Schmidt 9 votes… 53rd … polled in 2 games
Gogoll 8 votes… 61st …polled in 2 games
Rosewall 8 votes… 64th …polled in 2 games
Cameron 3 votes… 93rd… polled in 1 game
Muster 3 votes… 95th …polled in 1 game
Ahern 3 votes… 101st … polled in 1 game

We can compare that to the current leaderboard:
Tom Schiller 47
Shaun Baker 38
Ross Christie 36
Jason McKenzie 34
Scott Williams 31
Brad Mercer 31
Brad Taylor 31
Luke Turner 31
Heath Commane 28
Dean Cutting 24
Heath Lawry 24

Personally I am pretty astounded that a few of those 11 players didn't make the cut, especially considering the side doesn't have a genuine key forward!

BLG might not be taking the Zone game serious enough with the league still playing this round and with 'The Best' available players not playing...
Sadly what the BLG have done by enforcing suspensions and fines on players who are either unavailable or genuinely injured has created a Zone game tournament that no one wants to play in.
They are trying to force players to play in it that don't really want to play but are forced too and this creates players not giving a 100% commitment on field which then creates a bad performance which reflects on the Zone concept on field, why do they bother??
If the Zone selectors picked players that actually want to play in it then the players will of course throw a 100% effort into the concept which will create a much better performance on field.
You don't see the SANFL suspending players if they are unavailable or injured for the once off state game or the AFL suspending or fining players for being unavailable for International Rules for that matter!!!

Willaston's Brad Tosold has allegedly not played or trained since June 15th when he came off injured with a hamstring injury and was suspended by the BLG for one game due to being unavailable this weekend through a genuine injury??

If they are going to force players to play in it and enforce suspensions they need to make it clear to all the clubs before selecting the squad that 'The Best' possible players are selected in the first place and if 'The Best' available make themselves unavailable then make it compulsory for suspensions or fines, not select a good player here and an average player here and then pick and choose who gets suspended and who doesn't, this then becomes unreasonable and causes controversy.

Once again a lot of questions and not enough answers from the BLG...

Completely agree with the above...

How is it fair on clubs that have lost genuine guns this weekend or had players suspended for not being available when other clubs have clearly not had their best players picked?

The 12 they pick needs to be the best from each club plus a couple of under 23s and then the suspensions need to be enforced across the board. If they don't go down this path then it needs to be completely voluntary.

It just makes the concept an absolute farce when someone who is not even in your club's top 10 players is selected ahead of a genuine star of the competition while other clubs are hit with suspensions and fines if their best players are unavailable for genuine reasons!

Watched Tanunda on the weekend and they look to be hitting some form.
Spoke to a couple of players after the game who said Willaston still have to many
blokes who want to go the biff rather than play footy.
Nothing has changed.

The Panthers making a late run for September after exposing the soft underbelly of the magpies!
The chance of the Blockies not playing in September is becoming real.

Great day for the Bombers with a good win over the mercenaries.
Other results have kept us firmly in the mix for finals.
Barossa show once again they are the team to beat, hitting some ominous form

A log jam for 4th spot
Who will make it?
Willaston still to play the top three teams in the run home.

Reckon 3rd and 4th are still up for grabs.
Reckon South are far from finals certainties.
Next couple of weeks should make the picture a lot clearer

Current Ladder
POS TEAM P W L D B FF For Agst % PTS
1 Barossa District 11 9 2 0 1 0 1193 645 64.91 18
2 Gawler Central 10 8 2 0 2 0 984 751 56.71 16
3 South Gawler 10 6 4 0 2 0 1012 800 55.85 12
4 Tanunda 11 5 6 0 1 0 961 877 52.29 10
5 Willaston 10 5 5 0 2 0 964 918 51.22 10
6 Nuriootpa 11 5 6 0 1 0 926 943 49.55 10
7 Kapunda 11 5 6 0 1 0 919 1016 47.49 10
8 Freeling FC 11 3 8 0 1 0 756 1208 38.49 6
9 Angaston 11 2 9 0 1 0 565 1122 33.49 4

Top two shouldnt change from here on in, South having played GC and had the bye in the second round already has them in the box seat to finish third. Thought the Maggies were building but Sat's result is surprising (even though they had multiple more scoring shots). What's with Nuri, win games they shouldn't, the lose games they should win... Willaston with a game in hand against the competing pack should be in the box seat to pinch 4th spot, but their last few results show that not everything must be ok at Donnyland...

I think this will be the most interesting finals race and finals series for a decade!

With the top 2 home and hosed id expect to see a few "surprising" results over the remainder of the season.
Centrals especially are enjoying the leg up they are receiving and would want to ensure they have a bag full of points against next year. Think by my maths the Tigers need to drop 1 more game to avoid losing points, not sure about Barossa

Let's put a scenario.
Gawler Central purposely drop a game to keep their points balance for 2014 in check. Gawler South wins to be two points behind Central on the ladder. Suddenly Central has an upset loss, while South wins to draw level on the table or even go ahead, bearing in mind that South are very close on percentage. Central maybe ends up third on the ladder and lose the double chance in the finals.

They'd do all this just to maintain their points balance?? I think not.

All clubs' imports drop a point for each season they play. Not sure how many Central players are carrying points - I think it's four - so the club will regain that many points next season. The Tigers would have to win EVERY game from here on in anyway to lose their points cap. If they lose one (Tanunda or Willaston?) they finish on 13 wins. With two wins in 2012 it makes a total of 15 wins which - averaged over the two seasons - makes a figure of 7.5. Decimals are rounded down, so the figure will be seven, meaning they'll STILL have 12 points allocated in 2014.

Not saying they will do it in next couple of games, but if they still havnt dropped another one and are safe in the top 2, id bet they drop one near the end. They finish with Angaston and Freeling so id pencil one of those in as a "surprise" loss.
If they dont drop another game they will get cut back to 9 points next year
