I'll answer for some of the Walkerville guys. "We dont pay anyone" or "no one in our B grade gets payed, they are here for the love of the club". PFFFFT!
Serioulsy if a club can get to a point allocation across both grades of 40 points plus then good luck to them. I still feel it should be mentioned like it has previoulsy that having a staggering amount of points in a reserves side should also be capped. Understand blokes come back through injury but if the league want more equality amongst the grades this may be one step. If sides like Walkerville dont want to lose players to the country as much as they hate then "not paying" these players if they play in B grade? Thats not the best option and not one that helps keep good players in our league. The Walkerville coach has been very vocal about country teams taking players or offering rediculous money for players that would nt even make a Div 5 A grade side yet something very similar occurs at Walkerville. Good luck to them if tehy are able to keep all the players but for me , if i was offered a gig anfd kept playing in the 2's. I wouldnt be too happy. You can promote how much you hug eachother and spread the love like woodstock and loyalty to Walkerville all you like but thats not always going to keep blokes.
Oh Gomer... I don't know where to start in responding to your misguided comment. First of all, as far as I'm aware you have no involement with our club and with a number of cats on this forum we don't need you to respond on our behalf, but thanks for your attempt. I'm not sure where the "We don't pay anyone" quote came from? I don't recall anyone from the club making any such comment. No one in their right mind would be naive enough to think that most, if not all, division 2 clubs pay some players. As for the points players "issue", people need to realise that just because someone is a "points player" doesn't mean that they should be, or are good enough to be playing A grade at division 2 level. A young lad might come from the country for uni, if they played A grade back home they are worth points, does this automatically mean he should be playing A's? I think not. We have been able to keep a good squad for a number of years now, with our B's playing in every grand final since 2009. We have a great junior system up to under 15s but unfortunately none of our juniors go on to play seniors at our club (due to the fact there is a huge gap between under 15s and senior footy and a lot of our juniors go to private schools and end up playing for old scholar sides). I commend those who run our club for all the effort they put in making Walkerville a club that is able to attract players. Most of our recuirts know someone associated already with the club and as a current player I can confirm that it is a great place to play footy. People seem to have an issue with how things are done at our club but we've been able to establish ourselves in division 2 now which was something we only dreamed about in the early 2000s when we were yo-yoing between divisions.
