2011/12 NBL Season/off-season news/Boomers

Excellent news about the confirmation of Schenscher but Brodlach I don't think Ballinger is going to be back.

At this stage we've got signed: Schenscher, Johnson, Weigh, Cadee, Crosswell and Creek.

I dare say an import SG and maybe a back up import PF, possibly Ng and a back up centre to fill out the roster.

Schenscher/?
Johnson/Import
Weigh/Creek
Import/Ng or Herbert
Crosswell/Cadee

That's how I think the 36ers will line up next season.

Ok thanks Gozu, I thought he he had another year on his last contact.

Ng will play/be signed, isnt his father part on the ownership?

Yeah Balls is a FA and even though the Sixers are still saying they want him back the talk all offseason is that he's going to sign with Melbourne. Chances of re-signing him look even slimmer now given that Big Luke & DJ would be starting so Balls would probably have to come off of the bench and no doubt take a big pay cut too. I'd really like us to keep him but can't see him putting up with that and the Tigers have just lost Tragardh to Cairns so Balls could walk into the starting PF spot there. More shots, more minutes and you'd have to think more money on offer at the Tigers plus I think his wife is from Victoria too.

Actually I don't think Ng's father is still a part of the SOS group anymore. I heard a year or so ago he got out of his ownership share but might be wrong on that. Regardless I think Ng should be re-signed purely for how many more opportunities he will get from outside now with Schenscher operating down low and Big Luke is an excellent passer out of the post too.

Mentioned on nine news that the sixers want him but at a reduced contract because he has body issues as we all know.

Basketball Australia announced today that the Boomers will be taking on China in the YouYi Games series again this year. The three match series will be played in WA starting June 9 but surprisingly the series won't be televised on One but on Fox Sports nationally and on WIN and Channel 9 in WA.

The soap opera that is the Melbourne Tigers coaching situation continues with Trevor Gleeson stood down for a week with pay due to a club investigation. The talk is it's an arm wrestle between Gleeson and the club over the size of his possible termination payout with Chris Anstey waiting in the wings to take over as coach.

Boomers big man Aleks Maric is safe but two of his teammates have been taken to hospital after the bus his team in Greece Panathinaikos was travelling on was attacked.

AUSTRALIAN Boomers European-based star Aleks Maric is safe and two teammates in hospital after an attack on the bus his Greek team was travelling in Athens.

Maric was travelling with his Panathinaikos club to a Greek playoff game against rivals Olympiakos when hooligans threw rocks at the team bus, breaking windows and injuring two players.

Stratos Perperoglou and American import Steven Smith were both taken to hospital after the attack, where they were treated for cuts from broken glass.

The opening game of the best-of-five series between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos was subsequently postponed by Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports George Nikitiadis.

Maric posted a series of photos of the rocks thrown and the damaged windows on his bus on his Twitter account after the incident.

Unfortunately not uncommon in Greece. I remember watching the Greek league GF series a couple of years ago when fans threw flares on to the court and lit a fire in the stands with all the players evacuated and the game forefited. Even Shane Heal said on his time playing in Greece opposition fans pelted coins at him whilst on court.

Geeze it is hard to find a team in the NBL now days as there is no North Melbourne Giants or Southern Dragons. I hate the Tigers. I will just support the 36ers from now on.

Finally the drama around the Melbourne Tigers coaching situation has come to an end with the club sacking Trevor Gleeson and today announcing Chris Anstey as their new head coach, Darryl McDonald (a former interim Tigers HC himself) as an assistant coach and Rohan Short will remain as an assistant coach from the 12 month long Gleeson era.

Also today the NBL announced next season's schedule which will tip off on October 5th, the 36ers opening their season at home against the Tigers which will be both Luke Schenscher's first game back with the 36ers and also Adam Ballinger's first game with the Tigers against his former team.

In some very good news both Games 1 and 3 of the Boomers YouYi Games series against China will be streamed live free on the net by iinet!

I'm pretty sure Game 2 is in regional WA but Games 1 & 3 are both in Perth with Game 1 starting tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) at 3:30pm SA time.

The Boomers team for this series has been finalised too:

AUSTRALIAN BOOMERS YOUYI GAMES TEAM

David BARLOW / 205cm / Guard/Forward/ 22-10-1983 / Murcia (Spain)

Aron BAYNES / 207cm / Centre/ 9-12-1986 / Ikaros Kallitheas (Greece)

Ryan BROEKOFF / 201cm / Guard/Forward / 23-8-1990 / Valparaiso (US College)

Peter CRAWFORD / 193cm / Guard / 6-11-1979 / Townsville Crocodiles (NBL)

Matthew DELLAVEDOVA / 1990cm / Guard / 8-9-1990 / St Mary's (US College)

Hugh GREENWOOD / 190cm / Guard / 6-3-1992 / New Mexico (US College)

Adam GIBSON / 188cm / Guard / 30-10-1986 / Gold Coast Blaze

Julian KHAZZOUH / 209cm / Centre / 23-2-1986 / Sydney Kings (NBL)

Daniel KICKERT / 208cm / Forward / 29-3-1983 / PGE Turow (Poland)

Damian MARTIN / 188cm / Guard / 2-9-1984 / Perth Wildcats (NBL)

Matt NIELSEN / 209cm / Forward / 3-2-1978 / BC Khimki (Russia)

Mark WORTHINGTON / 202cm / Forward / 8-6-1983 / Gold Coast Blaze (NBL)

And in some NBL news the Melbourne Tigers have announced they've signed young aussie gun Nate Tomlinson who has been playing college basketball in the US for the last four years at the University of Colorado and the Tigers also announced they've re-signed centre Matt Burston.
