Well firstly, some on here will know I work for them and I usually disclose that whenever I comment on one of these threads. Also point out that my views are my views and not the company's.
Whether that leaves me with any credibility to defend them without calls of bias I will leave up to you.
Not so much a staunch defense as getting pissed off that people unload on Telstra without telling the full story.
I suppose it was this from Dedja that got me going --"No matter, I'm only 9kms from the nearest exchange which is monopolised by Tel$tra and the bastards won't let the other ISPs in."
The exchange is not monopolised by Telstra (note spelling Dedja
In a subsequent post he says he is on a RIM which is another kettle of fish entirely. For those who don't know a RIM (Remote Integrated Multiplexer) is a piece of pair gain infrastructure, fibre fed rather than copper and depending on the "model" not particularly ADSL friendly.Having said that ADSL is possible but the main restricting factor is space. There is no room in a RIM housing to accommodate a multitude of competitors DSLAMs and the like. So to say that Telstra won't let other ISPs into the RIM is just wrong, other ISPs can't fit into the RIM.
RIMS are old technology and were never meant for ADSL use as we know it today,no more are installed but the ones that are there get upgraded as time goes by and new stuff becomes available.
There is a project going on now called "Top Hat" whereby extensions are made to the housings to allow for more and quicker services. Gigabit backhaul and such. This is googleable and will give you a timetable of RIMs to be upgraded. I had a link and will try to find it if anyone is interested.
RIMS almost always have a 50 or 100 pair copper cable feeding them in addition to the fibre,to allow for services which were incompatible with RIM technology to have a copper feed back to the exchange.
You can ask your ISP to request a transposal onto one of these pairs, some ISPs will do that some wont. If successful you can get a service from whomever you like, naked even.Did you try that Dedja? Do you think Telstra should spend billions to provide all customers with a copper path when that investment will never return a profit?
Just read back thru this and have realised it isn't much more than a rant
Other points made about privatisation and retail/wholesale I pretty much agree it is a dogs breakfast and should have been handled far better, saying that it might have meant if Telstra had remained a Government business enterprise, they may not have had to buy back into the comms industry.
Sorry about raving and I admit I have lost my train of thought now so I'll put this up and let you have at it.
PS not having a crack at you personally Dedja
