My view is as follow and Ill use Ports and lions as my example. I cant see the Lions benefiting from 4 more points than Ports where 1 and a half players doesn't mean a lot if the quality Players go to Ports via the larger pay packet and Lions are left to pick from the scraps. One exceptional player on big dollars at 3 points will still be better or of more benefit to a side than 3 average players at 9 points total. You see it in the AFL money will find a way to make things work no matter what rules are put in place to make a competition even. All clubs rich or poor deep down in side know this and the rule changes need to be made to even up the bank balances of the leagues teams. Put a monetary penalty in with the points system which will act as a tax on the high rollers and the tax can be distributed to the poorer clubs to benefit the club and the competition at the same time
example
Ports have 14 Points and recruit players that takes them up to 20 points.
Instead of making quality players sit in the reserves and not improving the comp.
Place a weekly penalty say $1000 for each player over the points cap allow the players to play and distribute the Tax to the Poorer teams to allow for improvements in their playing list or at their clubs. This will even up the weekly available pool of money for each club and act as a deterrent for the rich clubs as they ultimately end up financing the oppositions recruits or club improvements. Rich clubs can use their available players but long term if the poorer teams are smart they will use the Tax benefits to better their club long term and when they are financially more stable turn the tides and work on getting the on field success.
My point is money will still make a big difference and the Points difference 5 between top and bottom wont. Force the rich to help the poor
Understand your points AM & SP but imho the points system will work over time.
No clubs will pay for quality players to sit in the reserves- they might want them but wont pay them to play b's leaving them available to be picked up by other clubs.
Clubs also wouldnt pay even $100 per week, let alone $1000 per week to play them above the points. What contract player that takes a club over 10-15 points (which would be their 4th best if all their recruits are their best players) is worth a $1000 a game above his match payments?

Thats $20,000 a year or $40,000 if you play 2, no club has that sort of $!
It stops a wealthy club pillaging clubs all around their area as they simply cannot play them and gives a club a chance to hold on to their juniors they develop as opposition clubs will only target the ones that are very good. Not sure what happens if an industry set up means a sudden influx of players to a region, points mean they cant all play.
The points system is not faultless but worth persisting to see how it goes over time, it will have the effect that the CFL wants, help even out teams and even out leagues. Good discussion point though!
