Just wondering what type of DVD recorder I need to be able to convert video tape footage onto DVDs, which could then be able to be put onto my computer to edit? Any ideas?

Any sort that accepts video/audio in, ie 99% of them.

I have one that does it but I'd recommend getting a tv card for your pc and putting the video directly into that for editting.

Cheers, any idea how much a TV card costs?

Would it work similar to a video camera, where you just plug it in and import the footage?

LG have a combination DVD recorder & VCR for $399.

Records to DVD-RAM, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R/RW. One touch dubbing from DVD to VCR and vice versa.

Cool. My next question would be - is it possible to burn a DVD onto a computer (with a program like DVD shrink) that has been recorded by a VCR/DVD recorder combo?

Yes, Ive done it several times but the DVD can be a bit finicky and require a few tries, much better to do it directly to your hard drive and burn a dvd from that. Worst thing I ever bought was a DVD recorder, complete waste of money.

Right. What's a reasonable price for a TV card? About $200?

You basically get what you pay for and it comes down to what you need/want.

For eg I have a dual tuner (both analogue and digital) which I find handy as my PC is the only place I can pick up Channel 31 so use the analogue for that and the digital for other things.

Ive only had experience with the one I have now which came with the PC
Im happy with mine, its a Hauppage WinTV 88x.

You can also look at buying an external one which you could use on more than 1 pc, that might be handy.

There's some internal TV cards for as cheap as $20 on Ebay and an external as cheap as $29.
I'd probably looking at paying a bit more than that for peace of mind, do some search of review sites, perhaps the whirlpool forums http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/
