I'm very tempted.
Haven't been a big game player for a long time, but the PS3 is an impressive console.
Will also be in it for movies on the high definition blu-ray format, but we have been shafted again with region coding.
Fortunately some US (region A) discs are currently region free and playable here (region B).
Games are region free.
A region A import machine from Japan can be had for around $700, while the local machine will sell for $1000 retail.
If I get one, I'll probably go local with a bundle deal and hope a region coding workaround is found.

I won't think about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD until I find out which one wins, a la VHS/Beta..

Probably a sensible move!
HD-DVD had the head start, but Blu-ray has caught up fast and is looking to me like the more likely winner with stronger studio support and player base (PS3).
JB-HiFi have cast their vote and decided not to carry HD-DVD titles at all (although the winning format will be decided overseas and not here).

Have thought about getting one but I cant justify the 1k purchase price when the only PS game I want is on PS2 and not guaranteed to work on PS3

Hey Stumps, the absolute best game ever is Grand Theft Auto (San Andreas)
Could possibly pick it up very cheap. Came out around $99.99
I think I saw the complete bundle for that price in EB Games Hollywood...?
I have the latest Grand theft Auto (Vice City Stories) Doesn't really compare....
Try and pick a up a copy of the Official Stratergy Guide.
You will not be disappointed
PS3 far too expensive but you can surf the net...? Unknown really... Have to wait for user comments....

It'll all come down to PORN. Plain and simple.
Tits and Ass.
The reason (or at least the biggest one) that BETAMAX lost to VHS was that the creator of BETA didn't want adult movies created and distributed on his format. Even though BETA was a far superior format to VHS, it lost the race.
Same could happen to HD-DVD if Sony do the same thing this time ...

This was supposed to the case again with Sony, but then I read that the porn producers were simply having problems finding blu-ray manufacturing facilities to suit them.
Blu-ray discs are more expensive to produce than HD-DVDs and require new or refitted manufacturing plants to produce them.
Blu-ray has more potential movie content available, while HD-DVD has cheaper players (for now).
But if porn sides with one format 100%, then yes, the format war may well be decided by them.

Yeah, larger capacity, but more expensive to produce! such a small initial layer, I can't beleive it would ever be cheaper than HD-DVD to manufacture.
I'm looking forward to see what happens.

I think it's quite possible that with Internet-delivered TV/movies coming soon ('legally', I mean...obviously this happens now a lot with torrents already) it's possible that neither format will end up moving a lot of units, even if they do "win" the format war. I reckon this entire technological step (Blu-ray/HD-DVD replacement of standard DVDs) will be pretty much by-passed by next year by newer developments.
