Good question.
In Melbourne there used to be a charity group who would collect old computers and repair them to give to poor families.
Back here I haven't been able to find one, despite ringing around.

Recently, I had a computer, and some peripherals that were outdated to get rid of and asked my local council.
They suggested I could drive about 8km, and pay money to drop it off at their waste depot.
The council doesn't do hard rubbish collections either, but that I could drop off at the depot free if I had a trailer to cart it in.

Solution:
I put the IT items in plastic bags and left them on the back doorstep of the nearby council office one weekend.
Hopefully they will get the implicit message.

A larger item of hard rubbish - an old oven - I had to pay someone to assist me in carting to the depot in their trailer.
The dumping of that was free, but the assistance cost me $60.

I've only got one old computer left now, which I think has a mobo fault - I suspect the graphics card slot is faulty.
I was going to look at repairing it to use as a separate Linux box some time, but I'd be happy to donate it to anyone who repairs them for charity.
If your mate does that you could PM his details to me or post them here.

Otherwise, I've recently heard there may be a group based in a town about 5 Km from here.
(If so its a pity the local council either didn't know about them, or couldn't be bothered to put me on to them.)

Yeah if you have anything you wouldnt want anyone to see, do it properly. I used to work at Cashies and some of the stuff I saw on computers and mobiles was amazing. From the regular nude selfies, to drug crops, large sums of money and pictures of weapons.

Man I loved that job....

X2 man it was the best. At one of the stores I worked the guys brought in their portable hard drives when they were cleaning the Hard Drives to sell the comps. Plenty of interesting Movies on them.
