External Hard drives?

Hi Guys O:)

Appologies in advance for my 'un-technical' computer terms, lack of knowledge and just plain dumbness when I post this..lol.

Just wondering if someone wouldn't mind taking the time to look at this link:

http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/stor ... sku-68039/

I have the following question..

Would this 'storage device' be okay for movie storage.

Basically 'A Son' would like a 1TB storage 'device' to store movies on.
Our TV can play movies via USB - so I think the idea is for him to load something like the above up with movies to play through the TV.

I'd asked him these questions but it will be a christmas present so would rather keep it a surprise !!

I have seen many variance in prices, but this is about how much I was hoping to pay.
So would just like some opinions.

Thanks in advance O:)

I am not a tech guru but I use a 1TB Samsung for movies plugged into my TV and it works well.

Whilst there are larger hard drives available these need an external power supply hence my preference for the more portable 1TB USB powered hard drives.

Others with more tech savvy than me can advise what is the best brand :)

I am a fan of external hard drives.

Buy 1 and I know you will buy another. :D

Bigger the better, "A Mum". ;)

JB is a reputable store.

Never heard of Buffalo as a brand before. WD, Seagate and Samsung would be better brands to look at.

Go for the cheapest you can find ... any USB2.0 HDD will be able to cope with the job at hand, regardless of brand which means little at this end of the market.

So go for it ...

When a bargain comes along, you must know your prices and hit it immediately. ;)

If you print-out the page, The Good Guys may match it, less for cash...

Gepps X.

just be careful AMum, ive found that sometimes these larger USB powered drives cant draw enough from the USB port... for eg mum and dads DVD/DIVX player i bought a 250 g portable ext hdd and loaded it with movies, plugged it in and it wouldnt start. largest the player will do is a 32g flash drive.

Ahhhh - okay.
Thanks BS.

I suppose I will just get it for him - if it doesn't work for the movies then he'll have plenty of space to store his year 12 work next year....lol.

Thanks again O:)

A Mum's link shows the drive to be ac powered BIG SEXY so it shouldn't be a problem.

I purchased this one earlier in the year for $99.

My suggestion, if you want to put stuff on the external hard drive and be able to use it, buy something with a reputable name. I've never heard of Buffalo either.

Also, wait for the after Christmas sales, cos this one will no doubt be about half the price it is now (again).

I don't sell a lot of the computing stuff at my work, but I do handle all of our returns...

Samsung hard drives.... Stay right away from them...
