Can Blu Ray discs purchased from America be played on a Playstation 3, or would the disc have to be region free?

Cheers.

The PS3 is region free.

The only thing that differs from AUS, UK, USA, JAP etc is the files.
Meaning my AUS Madden 11 save file won't work on another regions PS3

Only for games.

Movies are NOT region free.
Movies studios may designate their discs as region A, B or C.

This means some US releases are region locked, but many are region free.

Is that Blu-Rays that won't play or does that also apply for the standard movie?

Not 100% sure what you mean, but:

1. Blu-ray movies won't play if they are not region B
2. DVDs won't play if they are not region 4.
