Laptop Charger

My laptop charger finally died over the weekend. Is this something I can easily replace? DO I need to go back through Toshiba, or can I just pick up something generic from an electronics store.
What information do I need to have with me? And what sort of cost am I looking at?

Thanks in advance.

While the makers say "only use the our charger or it may cause damage" electricity is electricity.
Dick Smith used to have some that could be switched to whatever voltage is required within a range, and with multiple connectors.

I asked a similar question about 6 months ago. Dedja told me to get it from the laptop manufacturer (in my case, HP) but I chose the cheap Ebay option. It had a 3 month warranty and failed after 3 months and 1 week. I then bought the authentic one from HP and it's been working perfectly.

I needed a specific HP one and it ranged in price on Ebay from $16 to $35. The HP one was $70 delivered. As soon as the box came I could see the differences: proper warranty card, instruction booket and proper packaging.

so my advice is to take Dedja's advice and spend the extra money on the definite real deal.

If Dick Smith can advise you on something then I guess try that too.

Cheers Psyber.
Do I need to get one with the exact same output? Or does only one matter IE only need to match Voltage or Amps?

Hondo, cheers for the price range, given that it might be easier just to get the real deal.

You need the same nominal voltage, and as a minimum the specified wattage of the old charger.
A higher wattage capacity shouldn't matter - the laptop just draws what it needs.

Normally a charger delivers slightly more than its nominal voltage just as a car system can deliver 14 or 15 V to a 12 V car battery that is in need of charging.
The Dick Smith one I have when tested with just a multimeter delivers substantially more - 4.86V at the nominal 3V setting and 18.36V at the 12V setting.
But I assume that would be reduced with more resistance across the terminals.
