Not the drug, the computer whatsit. What is a crack exactly? I have found a link to something I wish to download, and it says I can download 'full version' or I can download the 'crack'. I can't download the full version because it wants me to pay money to create a user account. The crack is apparently free.

A 'crack' would normally refer to a pirated version with another small app supplied to generate a user key.
Seems odd that there would be a full version/crack choice supplied!

What is the app? If you don't mind supplying the link, someone could offer a clearer opinion.

Ahhh, it all begins to make sense. Yeah, the full version you had to pay for whereas the crack you could download for free. So I downloaded the crack, which turned out to be a trojan , so I found a different link and downloaded it, and this time it worked. I was after a keygen for a game of which I had the demo version, so I could get the full version without having to pay for it. I know that isn't very nice. I think you can find the full version for free anyway but there were so many different websites, all wanting me to sign up for this and that to be able to download things, that it got confusing.

As you have found, cracks are free ... but so are the viruses, trojans, worms and anything else that comes with them.

cracks and worms go hand in hand......
