I'm just about tearing my hair out here, so hopefully someone on here can help me with this. I've searched everywhere for an answer but still can't resolve my issue.

I have a new Netgear DG834G Wireless modem/router.

I have a laptop (XP) and Iphones connecting to the network successfully but my PC (Vista) is "connected with limited access". i.e. is picking up the modem but can't open web pages etc.

Anyone got any ideas?

How is your PC connecting to the modem? Wireless or cable?

Just a guess but maybe the thread heading is a clue?

Wireless.

I'm assuming it is a setting in Vista somewhere as my XP machine and Iphone connect no problem.

Test it out by connecting the PC (Vista) to the router with a cable.

Is it a matter of turning on the full wireless capability in your laptop? I know with ours we have to press the function key with one of the f* buttons to get it working?

My gf's works fine. Did you originally connect the modem to the computer using a cable? I'm not too tech savy, but that's what we did and wireless works fine now. If all else fails, ring your ISP.

Consider today's Zazz too and if I was you Id upgrade Vista for 7 even if that wasn't the issue.

Your issue has 2 fifths of bugger all to do with Vista or whether you are connecting via ethernet or wireless.

If you have limited connectivity then you're correct in that your PC is connecting to the modem in some form.

To fully connect to the modem/router, you need to obtain an IP address from the 'router' part of the device.

If the IP address of the router is say, 192.168.1.1, then when your PC (or anything else connects), it must have (or be served) an IP address in the same range ie. 192.168.1.xxx

If not, then you are not actually on that network.

The PC has 2 ways to obtain an IP address ... either the IP address is static (explicitly defined in the network settings) or the IP address is obtained from the router dynamically when it connects. This is called DHCP.

My guess is that you have an IP address specified in you network settings on the PC which is not on the same network range as the router. You will need to check the network setting for your wireless adapter on your PC and ensure that 'obtain an IP address automatically' and 'obtain DNS server address automatically' are set. This assumes that your router has DHCP set on.

I did check the IP Address etc and it is set to automatically obtain the IP address. I'm assuming router has DHCP set on as my XP laptop automatically obtains the IP address as well and connects ok.

Did this and connects successfully.

I'm still convinced it is a setting in Vista somewhere that is causing the issue.

I was too and after spending an hour with vista and googling info but it was the laptop.
What sort of laptop do you have mate, got a model number?

It is the PC that is having the issue, Laptop is connecting fine.

Urgh, I should learn to read. Cable it man! (or buy something like yesterdays zazz)

Had the same problem and found this via google:

and followed this solution, about 6th comment down:

Disconnect if u are connected to internet. Hold down windows key and

type R > in Run windows type services.msc click on OK > Click on

Continue > Look for service 'winhttp web proxy auto-discovery service'

turn this service on and change its startup type to autmatic.

Disconnect ur connection and conenct it again .access local only' will

disappear.

Seems to have done the trick for me.

I've also been having problems with dropouts with Bigpond and have now set max speed on wireless settings to 18Mbps which seems to have fixed the drop out problem. Seems to be a common problem with the Bigpond supplied modem when googled, Telstra didn't seem to be aware of it though.
