Out with the Old, In with the New

Postby Punk Rooster » Mon Sep 27, 2010 10:43 pm

Ok, my HD is on it's last legs- I have bought a new one, formatted it with the Windows back up I had from the first HD.

Now my question is this- how do I get programs of the 1st HD onto the 2nd HD?
I'm currently running both HD at the moment (new is Primary, older is Slave, but to use the net, I had to reverse this)

Has anyone got any tips?
I have moved photo's (thought lost) to an external HD.

I have a spare CD Beanie for you... ;)

Can't you Swipe/cut and save to your new HD  ..?

Maybe it's called backup...?

Generally, programs can't be copied.

They need to be installed. this is because parts of the program go in different places (Windows folders, registry, etc)

Some programs don't have to be installed but as a rule, they do.

If you downloaded the program then just copy the setup file across (if you still have that) otherwise you will need the CD again.

The only way to do it is to clone (full copy) of the original HDD to the new one.

So essentially a full backup of the old, then restore to the new.

If the old HDD is dead and you don't have a backup then you have to reinstall everything from scratch.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

it still has a heart beat (just).
So, back it up, then reinstall to new HD?
I've never done this- is it difficult?

Best to just reinstall the software IMO.

And, make a folder called "PROGRAMS" or "APPS" or something, and keep all your installations in there (in case you need to do it again later)
