My home phone sits right next to me on the computer desk - hence I have the volume turned down low, always have...

However

Someone, somehow has turned it to full volume and it just rang and it is deafning.

I can't find anywhere how to 'turn it down' again - and of course everyone in the house is innnocent and "Didn't touch it"

It's a Telstra display phone.
If anyone has any idea about how to turn the darn thing down, please let me know.

How stupid - you have to wait for the phone to ring and then press the down button

happens on all phones and phone systems, you need to make the phone ring to change the volume i get asked this 10 times a week in my communications job

Too true.
I'm keeping my old cars partly because new ones are too dependent on electronics.
For cars there appear to be no competitive outlets that will sell you a generic board for a reasonable price that you can fit yourself.
You can buy a graphics card, or even a motherboard, for your computer from about $80 upwards from places like CPL.
But a less complex circuit board for a car may start at 10x that.
