Old TV has pretty much died, need to get a new one (possibly this weekend).

Want to get a Full HD TV, but not sure which type. Any thoughts on whether Plasma or LCD is better? Any recommended brands/features?

Plasma for sport, LCD for movies. Thes the very rough guide. All depends on personal preference though.
the sales men well certainly sort you out though, we bough a v series 42inch panasonic plasma less than a month ago and its bloody amazing compared to our old(only two years, and been moved to the other room) panasonic plasma.

good time to be buying a tv too offers from sony regarding a ps3 or with panasonic a surround sound and blueray player!
even had a copy of avatar with it!

Unless you can afford a LED LCD TV go for Plasma, much better bang for buck.
I planned to get a LCD last year but after comparing one to a Plasma there was no choice especially for sport.
Lighting and room set up can effect either too, we had a thread in here before going through the merits of each.

Recently purchased a LG 50" Full HD Plasma for $980

Thanks for the replies. Should have added that I don't watch much sport on TV (can't imagine wanting to rewatch a North game this year, and probably the next year or 2 ). It wold be mostly for DVDs/movies.

There is little doubt a LCD gives a sharper picture and IMO better contrast, but for the size difference and the price difference I dont think you can go past a Plasma.

Think I'll go for a Plasma, am thinking either this one

A few years ago I bought probably one of the last big Sony CRT flatscreens just as plasma and LCD because I was never impressed with either. While I rue the fact it takes up a lot more space than any of the newer TVs, I've still never seen a plasma or LCD that gets anywhere near it for clarity and sharpness, despite having a look every time I go to an electrical store or to a mate's house with a plasma

I tend to agree - my old Misubishiy CRT Monitors were sharper and faster than the LCDs I use now too.
I've sacrificed them for the recovered desk space, just as I've moved to a 50" plasma for compactness too.
I don't miss the "sunburn" I used to get from the CRT monitors.

If there's no glare going onto the TV, then there's no real disadvantage with plasma... LG do one the you can pick up for about $700 (not full hd)

I just bought a new 40'' Samsung LED from Videopro. Ordered it over the net and got it delivered yesterday. Very impressed with the picture. Also works beautifully with my PS3.

What ever your happy with.

Plasma is far cheaper than LCD.

If you can get a 50+ inch screen for under a $grand.

Get it.

Forget 3D. It messes with your head...

particularly the viewing angle tab which allows you to adjust the angle and see the impact on an LCD, recently bought an LCD and was trying to work out what was wrong with it.....

your lighting conditions will also impact choice.......

also I find the colour reproduction better on the plasma.....

Only thing that stopped me buying a plasma, is they like to guzzle energy.

Check the refresh rate........try and get minimum 100Hz........

Every Plasma tv I saw consumed almost 3 times the power of an LED LCD of equivalent size.

I hadn't looked at LEDs which were just being released at astronomical prices at the time.
You still need to look at how long it would take the energy saving to pay for the difference in price
I'm bemused by the way by the fact that LED technology has made torches and after market car lights much cheaper, but household light fittings and TV sets much more expensive.
[It looks like a con job to me and I'm highly resistant to being conned, so that gives me a bias. ]
