Internal wireless modem

We have a wireless home network. My work laptop connects fine. The wireless internet connection on our home one is now dropping in and out. So I assume it's the internal modem (right terminology?).

If so, is it a difficult or costly task to replace the internal modem?

If not, any other ideas?

Thanks experts

Update: the work laptop just lost its connection too and then came back again after 5 minutes

Must be the wireless modem at the phone line? It's about 3 years old

I have similar issues but it's the phone line thats the problem. Telstra are useless as tits on a boar pig too, they've come out twice, fiddled around in a hole across the road and leave a card telling me everything is fixed when nothing has changed.

The Telstra policy is to let the copper rot as they have to share access to it with their competitors.
If they didn't have to allow access, and had no competition to hold back their pricing, they would have replaced it with fibre years ago.
Hopefully, the compulsory split the federal government is threatening goes ahead and then there will be motivation to do something about it.

Unfortunately, the PM is showing signs of dropping any policy that starts to look too hard to implement, after the rhetoric has done its job.
That way he can trot it out the same promises again for the next election... ;)

One way to test exactly what is the problem would be to connect a computer with a cable to the modem and see if that drops out. If not, then it is likely the wireless signal from your modem. If it does drop out then it is the modem itself or the incoming line.

I rang Telstra and it seems we have the same problem as you - issues with the phone line.

Smac - I will also do what you suggested

Fiddling in a hole usually causes problems!

I'm having some similar problems with my cable system.
Internode have unofficially conceded there is nothing more they can do because the problem is the copper.
[That is, a weekend tech said it as a whispered aside - nothing official.]

This is a sort of related enquiry!!

ok a little bit of background. I had ADSL1 through netspace and it was slow, i finally upgraded to ADSL2 (corromandel exchange) through adam internet.. Originally it was all good and i was getting good bandwidth speed. watching iview, youtube etc was great.

Over the last few weeks i have had probs streaming. I checked my bandwidth download bit speed. I am getting only 800 through my laptop wireless and 1200 bits through my PC. Adam Internet, said its nothing to do with their connection??? It's been like this for a good two weeks or so. Adam has refused to help. How or why is my speed so slow on ADSL2? i am trying to learn about all this. Is adam af fault here? How can I improve my speed again?
cheers guys.

Need more info.

And I really doubt Adam refused to help. I know a lot of their CSO's
Copper can degrade over time however.

Some questions:

What performance profile are you on? Have you change it at some point? (its in your members area - View Performance Profile)
What speed were you syncing at? What are you syncing at now? (its in your members area - View Performance Profile)
Have you checked your cabling? How much cable goes from your wall to your modem? Can you shorten it?
Have you unplugged your phone? Have you changed your filter? Is there more than one phone in the house?

thanks for replying mate. (just warning im a real novice)

adam staff refusing to help is not quite right (i was Just frustrated) - actually staff at adam have been pretty good, they help as much as they can but wont help for wireless, which they are not alloud to. It's just i have no idea what im asking or trying to do - the I.t dude has been a big help at work..

performance profile (just looked it up) - didnt know this was here and i havent changed it.
Current Downstream: 1,792 kbps
Current Upstream: 512 kbps
Current SNR: 6 dB

not sure how to find out what im syncing at? my modem lists same info as my performance profile.

just checked my cabling from wall plug to my modem, it is heaps long, must be 20m of it all bundled up - could this effect the speed??

I have 2 cordless phones at home and YES have unplugged them lately (about two weeks ago) when i changed phones...? speed really seems to vary sometimes its fast enough, other times its dropped right down.

cheers

just an example of my inconsistant speed, checking at 1/4 time (for those who give s**T) is 0.4 (400kbps) according to the test on iview - http://www.abc.net.au/iview/

Speed in very consistant, 20.21 this morning according to http://speedtest.net/

Ok, first thing, make sure an ADSL filter is put on both those connections to your phones. It probably isn't that, but it might help.

2nd thing. Get a shorter cable to your modem if you can, only get it as long as you need it. 20m of cable bundled up will definitely cause problems. Less cabling the better.

ok WS sortened my cable to 1m !! it changed my speed from 1792 to 1823. Not much but something, im sure im not running at that speed all the time, it really does vary at different times.

most speed tests i get 1500, but much lower on iview. cheers for your help tho.

OK

Do an address lookup on http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/

It will tell you how far you are from the exchange.
