Howdy so i run a rear projection big screen with a digital box a vcr and dvd player. i want to work out how to or what do i need to get to be able to tape from digital hd channels. im never home so be good to tape stuff that is on and watch later. any help would be appreciated

It's like a VCR but records to a hard drive.

im not 100% sure on a way to record off a set top box without actually loosingg the HD status too your tv without having a built in hd/sd recorder tuner combo, but this is what i would do:

Arial > Set top box > Video recorder (av in, or simular) > AV 1 on your tv
DVD > AV 2

This means that to watch digital tv you have to have your tv set to AV1 AND have your recorder set to the av in on the actual recorder. This way has many downfalls but its a start.

i braught a panasonic Blu Ray Recorder, they have Duel HD tuners so you can tape two things at once or tape 1 and watch 1

And what sort of costs would i be looking at? What brands are recommended?

I got a BeyondWiz DP-LITE

Works awesome... twin tuners. Uses ICETV. I can use an app on my phone to schedule recordings on my PVR. Also can record full series too.

The DP-LITE doesn't have any inputs, so you can't plug in a VCR. But my TV has 4 x HDMI slots, and 3 lots of RGB plugs, so I just plug each appliance into the tv directly.

Do you have a PS3?

If so, Play TV would be all you need.

I was told VCRs are incapable of recording digital signals unless they have a digital input. I've never tried.
I suppose you could put a T joiner into the wall socket and take the signal off one side to the VCR's analogue tuner, and feed the digital tuner off the other, and you might be able to feed both signals to different inputs on a TV..

What I did recently, because I needed a new digital antenna set a bit higher in the air and further along the house to get the SBS channels acceptably, was leave my old analogue antenna on the roof, hooked up to one of the old indoor sockets I didn't need digital to.
I did that more because it was cheaper to leave it like that then take it down than anything else. I have a Panasonic PVR/DVD recorder and a separate Blue Ray player.
The local antenna tech says the cheap brands are OK in most places, but have less adequate tuners which matters in fringe signal areas.
[ I don't plan to record to Blue Ray - I've only recorded about 4 DVDs in my life and they were data off a computer.]

I think i'll get in touch with the technician who i'm intending on installing it, to get some advice.

If what i'm thinking is right, there's a chance that, depending on the circumstances of the set up, a digital tv can only be configured to tape either digital tv or analogue tv, but not both.

Tape or record?

All the PVR's these days record to a hard drive. VCR's are dead.

Don't pay someone to install it, waste of time. They are easy as!

Analog is dead too, everything on analog is shown on digital now, plus more. No point viewing to recording analog signals.

All PVR's record digital signals.

My bad... If someone does actually want to tape Digital TV, then I will laugh at them...

But $548 for what it is, is pretty hard to go past.

It has a twin High Def tuner- so hook it up to an analogue TV, and one tuner becomes a set top box, the other records a different program to the internal (250GB) hard drive.

on a digital tv, you can record two show at one time (technically you can as well on an analogue tv, but you can't be watching a third show at the same time...)

also acts as a dvd player/burner, so you piss off another device...

Matched with a Panasonic digital tv, you ALSO can use just one remote...
