I need to set this up right...

Postby smac » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:37 pm

Below is a floor plan of my home, we are currently moving in. The red dots mark phone points in the home, although we won't use them all.

Next to the plan is a list of the hardware I have and at the bottom is a brief description of how I want to set things up. Any help in getting this right would be appreciated!

Image

- The modem, ATA and printer will be in 'bed 5', which will be the office
- The Panasonic cordless phone will be in the kitchen (although this can be the office also as there is a second handset that can be in the kitchen)
- The printer needs access to the POTS line, so that it can send faxes (as far as I know, VOIP cannot handle faxes - happy to be corrected on that one)
- There is a monitored security alarm, I assume that is connected in the roof space somewhere

We are happy to spend some money to get it right, including a central splitter. Any alternative ideas/suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Nah, in that sort of thing I'm too lazy and just go wireless.
My mate at work who is a genius would probably recommend some sort of network with servers, I'll ask him tomorrow but he might not have a real good view of the plan on my phone.

smac, not quite sure what you're question is to be honest.

Going on what hardware you have, I'm assuming you have (or will have) a broadband connection and want to use voip (hence the ATA).

Since you have a monitored alarm you will definitely need a central filter.

I'm also assuming that you want to use voip on all phone points. You can use fax on voip on some vsps but safe bet to use pots.

Can you please confirm ... I think I can give you a simple solution.

Funny enough Jimmy, we didn't own a TV at all for several years!

Yes, dedja, we do want to use VOIP on as many phone points as possible (although happy to not have a phone in the garage!).

Our VOIP supplier doesn't support fax, happy to pay for the POTS call for the few faxes we will ever send. Just want to get everything sorted right - central filter is no drama, a mate who works for telstra is already on that job.

A diagram or description of how to connect everything is what I am after.

Cheers,

OK, if you have someone to do the central filter then you just need them to do a couple of other things.

The central filter will do the following:

- allow integration of your monitored alarm system
- provide a filtered POTS line
- provide an ADSL line

Assumptions:
You have 4 core phone cable installed in your house (2 pairs = 2 phone lines).
Phone points are wired in a daisy chain (not in a star pattern to a central point)

You will want POTS and ADSL servicing your study (bed 5), hence 2 pairs required. Filtered POTS will be delivered on the first pair, whilst ADSL can be delivered on the 2nd pair (from the central filter) - ask your central filter tech to do this. If your phone points are daisy chained, then every phone point will have filtered POTS on the first pair and ADSL on the 2nd pair.

Now if you weren't using voip you'd be set ... but you are so will have to factor that in.

Now as you phone cabling should be daisy chained, you will have a 4 core phone cable coming down to that phone point in the study, then a return cable back up to the next point.

The phone point in the study will need to be changed to a double point to allow for filtered POTS on the first pair (line 1 in) and ADSL on the 2nd pair (line 2 in) ... for the cable in.

Now you'll need another phone point to connect to the first pair of cable up (line 1 out) ... for the cable up.

Once this is setup, you simple plug in the first pair (line 1 in) to the ATA line in, and ATA phone to (line 1 out) ... this will provide voip to all other phone points.

Connect line 2 in to you modem (ADSL), and assuming it has a spare ethernet ports (ie. it's actually a modem/router), connect an ethernet cable from the modem/router to the ethernet port on the ATA.

To use your fax, simply connect this to your line 1 in (put a double adapter on it) as this is POTS.

That will (I think) give you what you want.

That is, the study will have a POTS and ADSL line in, whilst the rest of the house will have voip phone points.

This is basically how I've set my house up.

If you want to return all phone points to POTS, then simply connect a phone cable from line 1 in to line 1 out.

I hope that make sense!

Yes, that does make sense mate - appreciate the time taken to describe.

I just couldn't make sense of it myself!

One last thing, I assumed that the study is the first phone point which it may not be.

If it isn't, the get you telco guy to run a new line from the central filter to that room to provide filtered POTS and ADSL.

You can then plug in voip into the rest of the house as described above.
