Not sure if this has been a topic previously but, as I am getting an iPhone in the next week or so, I thought I would try save myself some time by seeing if anyone had any recommendations on apps that are useful or interesting.
I don't fancy making my way through the 50k odd they say are in their, no doubt most of which are utter bollocks.
any must have apps people?

There are some good free apps that I Have.
1. Facebook for iPhone
2. Google Earth
3. Paper Toss (highly addictive game)
4. Bump allows you so send pictures and contacts to other iPhones seeing Bluetooth dissalows it.
5. Domino's - allows you to order pizza from your iPhone
6. Gorillacam - a free app that gives your camera a few more functions
7. Shazam - if you open this program and a song is playing on radio etc it will identify the song for you
A couple of pretty good paid apps I have
1. TomTom - the new iPhone has a GPS built in so TomTom for iPhone is much cheaper than a stand alone TomTom
2. Grand Theft Auto China Wars. Full Grand Theft Auto Game for iPhone - best game on iPhone I reckon
3. Tunein Radio - allows you to tune in any radio station in Australia including AM
There's a few to think about.

I made my missus get the Fishing game and became addicted pretty quickly (great when you pair up with mates and compete directly against them).
There's also another game, which is going to sound stupid (and no doubt is) where you have to see how many pieces of crumpled paper you can throw in a bin lol ... How to keep an idiot occupied hey??
Shazam is pretty useful if you're into your music

There's a kick ass app that allows you to program in names and numbers and then have that name/number call your phone as if you're actually receiving a call.
It's a brilliant pranksters tool:
You're on the gas with your mates.
Your mate has a hot sister/mum (or not so hot - still funny!).
You program said sister/mum's name (and if possible no) into the app and set it to call in 2 mins.
Put your phone on the bar/area visible to your mate.
Tell your mate his sister/mum is hot and say you'd tap that.
Your phone rings with his sister/mum's details.
You pick up and pretend to chat up his sister/mum, sending your mate into a rage.
It's priceless and endless entertainment.
Can't recall what it's called though.

One thing - is the iPhone any good as a 'phone?
Nobody ever seems to mention that...

LOL, good question.
Others may have a different opinion, but for me the phone capabilities aren't at the high end and can struggle with reception more than other phones I've used in the past.
Not withstanding that, with the other added (non phone) capabilities, it's the best and most versatile smart phone I have used by far.

Best phone I've had for reception in my area, we're in a real black hole.
No dropouts anywhere like I've had with all other phones.

Where we live has been a real problem for me in terms of reception, even with a Next G phone struggled to get 1 bar, but with the iPhone it has almost full bars all of the time, it is brilliant in that respect.

Works great as a phone. Full Next G coverage in the little valley i live in. Call quality cant be faulted and i love the way when u sms its comes trough in conversation form, no rummaging through ur inbox for a msg. Apps are a bonus to a good phone. All the APps i have have already been mentiond, but if ur musicially inclined like myself get 'Digi Drummer' Download the Lite version for free. I hook it up to an amp at a mates house and jam with him. lot easier for just practice without lugging my kit around

i've just jailbroken my iPhone and having a play. apparently there are heaps of paid apps from the app store that are free once it's jailbroken, my mates is already done and the themes that you can download are wild, much sexier than the basic look of the iPhone...
games wise though, i just got 'tap jockey' after a recommendation from another mate, a good time waster...

just downloaded 'Football Manager Handheld 2010' and love it...
normally $14.99 but cost me nothin thanks to the jailbreak...
just started a season with Adelaide United and it has their full squad of players (all spelled correctly too) and has every aspect of the managerial side of the game... contract negotiations, loan signings, transfers, plus i just played the trial against para hills... as if Para Hills get a mention in the game!!!
i might end up getting a bit carried away i think...

it allows you to customise your iPhone and then install third party apps, things that can't be done normally like change the icons, backgrounds etc, plus there are emulators so you can install and play heaps of games from Nintendo, sega etc that aren't available through the app store plus you can get the same apps that most people pay for, for free...
and it's not hard either.
