Modem

My modem is very hit & miss (since switching from Bigpond to Internode).
It is about 2.5 years old- is there any reason this should be playing up?
It cuts out (ie no internet access), & as mysteriously as it disappears, it reappears...

Punky, have you made any changes other than changing the provider details from Bigpond to Internode?
And have you configured Internode exactly as per their general settings?
http://www.internode.on.net/support/gui ... ings/#adslWhat model modem is it?

when i contacted Tech support, after running "diagnostics", the verdict was the Modem wasn't talking to the PC, & also a USB ERROR came up

LOL, typical user, doesn't answer any of the questions!
The make/model of the modem and how you have it connected would be useful ... otherwise there's no context for your error.

Dedja, I had heaps of problems using the required settings from Internode. In fact, when they pre-configured one and sent it to me, I had to ring them and they then talked me through the 'real' settings. Only then did I get it fixed. I was having massive dropouts like Punk, and they even sent a replacement modem in place cos they originally couldn't figure it out.
Ultimately, as a last resort, I got on whirlpool.net and got some answers from other frustrated users who'd had the same issues I had.

gadj, can you highlight or remember what you did to help Punky?
Punky, as a start I'd suggest:
- PPPoA is selected
- obtain internet address automatically
- obtain DNS settings automatically first, if no joy then set
primary DNS as 192.231.203.132 and
secondary DNS as 192.231.203.3
Some modems have particular settings that sometimes need tweaking for a particular ISP ... most work pretty well out of the box.
The other thing is if you still have trouble is to post the error log (under Troubleshooting - Event Log Page) so I can see what might be happening when you try to connect (PM if you like).
Of course this all depends on your connection being stable enough to enable you to post!

sadly, I have no idea what you're talking about....

LOL, Punky, how did you set up the modem for Internode mate? You must have changed something?
I can try to guess what you did but I'm not getting much help ... any chance of being a bit more vague?

BTW Punk, it MAY be your modem, Im with internode and a couple of months ago it started to drop out, got a new modem and all had been perfect since then. I've also had drop outs in the past due to a poor line. I've found the Internode web site quite helpful at times and find the staff very good when I've rang up too.

Punk, I suggest ringing Internode and being patient because it may take more than 1 call. They can see access your line details to see how regularly your line is dropping out and why.
There should be a setting on your modem that you can access that will allow remote log on (to Internode). I suggest you recommend this to them because all the PPoE's is complete gobbledy-gook to me! If you can't access your modem, then they can walk you through that too.
Alternately, they may walk you through checking and changing some settings.
The guys and gals on the helpdesk are pretty patient even for the uninitiated like myself.
My line was dropping out every two to three minutes, I couldn't get wireless and my phone was dropping out every call (I am on naked ADSL with a VOIP phone - ie, no line into the house so that Telstra and Optus can slug me $$'s). After a few phone calls, a new modem and some tweaking with the settings, it was all fixed.
I was just about to throw the entire thing in and go back to Optus (including switching my internet to them) but it's all sweet now. My wife doesn't complain that the phone drops out any more, so life is sweeeeeeet!
If you can't be bothered with ringing internode, get dial-a-geek or similar to come in and sort it out (check their costs before going down that path).

Good in theory but it turns out the flurries of 30 second drop outs I have been getting intermittently don't show up on Internode's system.
I'm now emailing them my Event Logs, along with my list of drop outs to see if they can find any correlation.
However, the set up is now working much better than it was - no major VOIP fades now, I am on line most of the time, and the modem now reconnects itself.

Sounds like the same problem I had mate, a real bastard when it drops out during a raid in World if Warcraft. Keep talking to Internode but my guess is new modem or dodgy line. Every modem Ive had has had a pretty limited lifespan mind you my family and I hit the net pretty hard.

they have traced the problem back to the modem.
i've run tests (via Internode's Tech Support) & it all points to the modem not working.

Cool, sounds like the exact same issue I've had a couple of times, a new modem fixed things a treat for me.

If you're convinced it's the modem there is one more thing you can do before giving it up.
Try either a firmware update or perform a firmware rescue ... it can happen that the firmware gets corrupted. I thought mine had died a while back and I ran a firmware rescue then installed the latest firmware and has been sweet ever since.
Just a thought if you're game as it might save some dollars.
If you don't know how to do it or can't be bothered then by all means buy a new one ... but a slight word of caution, if you haven't established that the modem has died (even though you stated that you have), you may (hopefully not) be disappointed that a new modem doesn't fix the issue.
For example, the issue could be as simple as a faulty phone cable from the socket to the modem.

One thing I have noticed recently is how hot modems and routers get. I have had to replace 2 routers and 1 modem in the last few years. First indication there is a problem is when your Internet service starts dropping in and out.
