Google has launched it's competitor to the iPhone:

Looks pretty impressive in terms of its functionality, but still short of the iPhone's sexiness.

If it has drag and drop capabilities and the ability to upgrade media (ie flash players!!!!) it will be the choice for those that are tech minded.

It's not currently available in Australia.

Visually, using a MAC is sexier than a PC, but most people still use a PC.

I wouldn't underestimate this new phone. HTC know their stuff.

I read earlier that it isn't compatible with Australian networks so we are unlikely to see it here. Disappointing, looked to be something that may get me back into the smart phone market (have been using a Nokia candy bar for the last 18 months due to their being nothing else grab my attention).

Surely these days compatability is something they can fix quick smart if they think sales would be pofitable. Wouldn't be surprised if you get one soon enough.

From what I saw on the BBC News on launch day when their techie geek reporter chap did a comparison of the two phones the only thing Google seemed to fall down on was Apps...iirc it only has 16,000 at the moment compared to something like 300,000 for the iPhone but everything else apparently is better....screen size slightly bigger, phone slightly slimmer, better camera etc etc etc. and the Apps will no doubt increase pretty quickly. Upshot was that they reckon it's a very, very serious piece of competition for iPhone.

Australian mobile networks use the same technology as the UK and pretty much every other country in the world with the exception of the US, Canada, Mexico and a few others.

Buy a US version of this phone and it wont work in Aus.
Buy a UK version and get it unlocked - you're sweet as a bag of wheat.

I just found the article I read - skim reading may have caught me out. It will work, just not quite as well as it could.

Australians who buy the phone abroad in hopes of using it with their local SIM card could be in for a rude shock. A Google Australia spokeswoman said the phone was not fully compatible with Telstra's Next G network, although it should operate on "most" GSM networks.

"The phone will work with nearly all GSM SIM cards worldwide (but) there are some carriers like AT&T in the US and Telstra Next G who have different 3G frequencies, so users can only access 2G or Edge networks with the current Nexus One," she said.

I was out of contract with my Nokia E51 so upgraded on the weekend now the smartphones are available on decent $49 pm plans. The wife has a iphone so after some research decided to grab a HTC Desire, really impressed so far, but hardly scratched the surface with what it can do. Web browsing (which is tha main reason for the upgrade) is fantastic and with flash capability beats the iphone easily. Its also a touch thinner than the iphone.

Wish I got a HTC - great phones. Went for the Samsung Omnia Icon (because I couldn't get the HTC HD2 with my carrier) and it's okay, but the constant lagging shits me to tears. Still waiting for the upgrade to Windows 6.5
