Postby RustyCage » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:12 pm

What is the best web browser to use? I use firefox but im finding it increasingly sluggish, which doing a bit of research is common to many users as it cant handle java heavy sites very well anymore.

What does everyone else use?

I was about to give up Opera for Firefox because I planned to use Thunderbird for email, but Opera 10 came out and I found it so much faster than Firefox.
There are a few sites that won't work properly with Opera, which is very strict about security - Telstra sites sometimes for example.
I fire up Firefox for those then check for nasties later.
I download from Mozilla Europe, or with Opera download the International version, so I can get English-GB instead of English-US.

I only use IE if I want to got to the Windows Update site - because they exclude you if you don't.
I tried Google Chrome, but didn't like the way it handled bookmarking.

Been a Firefox user for a long time now.
-good interface
-rapid updates
-handy features (add-ons mainly)

Are you using version 3.5.x? (there were supposed to be performance improvements over 3.0.x, but they may have "introduced" other issues...)
If there is a real problem, then they'll probably be working on it.

Haven't tried Chrome or Opera, but the latter does have its fans.

I use IE, FF and Chrome (and Safari when forced to use a Mac, yecch!) - Compared to the others Chrome is lightning fast, clean and my preferred browser. Two things prevent me from deleting the other two browsers though. Chrome doesn't seem to handle PDFs for some reason and it doesn't support the hopeless Ed Dept online email system I need for work. Apart from that if you haven't tried Chrome yet I thoroughly recommend doing so.

I've used Firefox for a few years now and never had any problems with it.

Occasionally I'm forced to use IE...I do paid surveys and one or two are IE only...I'm afraid I don't like it at all. Takes ages to load and often crashes with the message box that it's 'encountered a problem and has to close...'

Have never tried any others so can't compare to Opera etc. but i'd definitely say steer clear of IE.

Some huge issues have arisen recently with Internet Explorer.

This information originally appeared at:
http://www.scmagazineus.com/new-attack-against-ie-could-expose-all-files-on-a-victims-pc/article/162466/

"Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer web browser suffers from several minor flaws, which, when combined, can allow an attacker to read all the files on a user's computer"

"a security consultant at Core Security Technologies, is scheduled to give a presentation on Feb. 3 at the Black Hat conference in Washington DC, demonstrating how an attacker could leverage four to five flaws in design features of Internet Explorer to read every file on a user's computer"

"Microsoft recommends users upgrade to IE 8, sign up for Microsoft Update and enable the automatic update functionality to ensure their browser is up to date with the most secure version"

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid.

LOL, not really.

Listen carefully ... no system is safe. None, niente, kein, никто, aucun.

Even the bank that holds your life savings is vulnerable.

I use IE8 and have no reason to change despite that report.

I receive confidential security alerts as part of my job so I see stuff like this all the time.

As I've stated before, think of it like securing your house when you're not home ... you can put as many deterents as you like but at the end of the day, if someone is determined to break in, they will.

Similarly, IT security measures are no more than deterents for wannabe hackers.

France has joined Germany in calling for web users to use an alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer after the browser was found to contain a serious security flaw, thought to have been exploited in the Google China cyber attack.

My computer's pretty rooted at the moment - needs reformatting - but whereas Internet Explorer keeps freezing up and causing my operating system to shut down, Firefox doesn't seem to be affected at all, works great! I don't like the layout as much as IE but it's a hell of a lot faster.

Came across something last night.

I use chrome and was just mucking around designing a website... well re-designing.

Looked awesome on Chrome... loaded in FF and all the images appeared pixelly.

Apparently chrome uses a different rendering algorithm which shows images a lot better than FF and IE. Ended up having to muck around with the image so that FF shows it clearer.
