i am now the proud owner of a 120gb ps3, after my sister won one, but didnt want it! so she gave it to me! STOKED!

anyway, as i am about as technoligically minded as a brain-dead gold fish, need some help with a couple of things.......

1. how do i get online with it? i my bro said i goota get a router of some description, but need some more help. where do i get a router, how much should it set me back, and does it just plug into a usb connection on my console? and what sort of costs are involved in the internet on the ps3. (i assume it would be similar to just having another wireless bbroadband connection in the house?)

2. he also told me to get a HDMI cable, as it made his game clearer than real life would be on a TV. but my TV isnt FULL HD, (i know that much!), but it does have an in-built HD tuner. so, will using HDMI cables really improve my picture as much as his did (his TV is FULL HD) or will it change minimal or not at all?

dunno about the 2nd Q but the first one is what sort of internet connection do you have a the moment? From what I now you can either hard wire them or connect wirelessly if you have that broadband set up (this is what I do) If you cant do the above I believe you can install updates by downloading them onto a USB from their website and then uploading to your PS3

If you have a HDMI input for your TV, go get a HDMI cable. It reads as though your TV will display a resolution of 1080i, which is what HD TV is broadcast at. So PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies will also display at 1080i, which is fine on TVs up to 42". You can also connect your PS3 to your TV by component cables and display 1080i, but I'm fairly sure you would have to buy the special PS3 component cables. So go for cheap HDMI.

cheers guys.

dutch, (sorry if i sound dumb, but......) my internet at home at the moment is a wireless Optus Pre-Paid setup, just a yellow thing that is plugged into a USB connection. so what would be the best option to get the ps3 online from that? do i need to buy something else anyway?

and please pretend your trying to explain it to a 4 year old, coz thats about my technology age!

I don't think you can connect the PS3 up via a USB dongle.

You can get a unit which you plug the dongles into and it gives you wireless around your house, haven't looked one up recently but about $150 a while back from memory. Could be cheaper now.

I have been investigating getting a ps3 lately and i believe that they have built in wireless capability, so you should be right. they also have provision for a cable for those of us (including me) that dont have wireless. i dont actually have one though so i am happy to be corrected if i am wrong!

You're right mate. Ive used my PS3 online via wireless and also plugged into the wall. It was a lot faster and less prone to drop out when plugged in, but saying that, it rarely dropped out with the wireless.

You will need to make sure all the Network Settings are right and connect it...but its pretty simple...just go to Network Settings and follow the prompts.
