What virus protection should I obtain

Im prepared to spend about $1000 -$1500 [If that is enough]

IT board.

Seriously. I've had good recommendations from posters there re purchasing a specific machine, and I recall a discussion on virus protection within the last month or two.

we are with ADAM and have absolutely no problems

Mal get a laptop with wireless broadband, then you can take it to the track, like Angle Park today and have the bookie odds, your unitab account up, your VIC account, NSW TAB, sportsbet, sportingbet, betfair all on the go

From my limited experience I can recommend Photec at Blair Athol http://www.photech.com.au
Excellent service before and after and the website is good - you can choose from one of their pre built systems or BYO (build your own) with a few clicks.

Oh and Adam is really good and reliable too, esp since they added the off peak service. Some of the deals TPG have at the moment look tempting, does anyone have any experience with them?

I'm on TPG and have had no problems. They seem to offer value for money.

Don't go TPG. They are cheap but you get what you pay for. I was wih them once and had constant dropouts and found the customer service terrible.
One of my work colleagues is thinking of going to consumer affairs, he joined up with them 3 weeks ago on a 24 month contract and has already lost connection for the last 3 days and gets no help when he rings up heir helpdesk in India who struggle with English.
I pay a little more to be with internode but on the rare occasion I've had to ring them up I get someone in Adelaide and have a very quick and reliable service. I've also heard very good things about Adam and ven thouh I've never been with them I'd also recommend them.
They'd probably be the only 2 I'd recommend.

As far as a new pc for mal, you could get something for your needs for around $500.
Talk to Diss or get a pre built machine from a place like MSY.

I too have had hassles with TPG.

With Adam for about 3 years no with no hassles at all.

I had big problems with TPG back in the dial-up days - much along the line Wedgie described. They were OK at first but deteriorated as they grew.
I've used bot iiNet and Internode since and been happy with both. Friends have been happy with Westnet.

I tend to use the free antivirus options and have just moved on from Comodo Antivirus to Avira.
For general malware I have the free Ad-Aware running full time, and keep Malwarebytes and EMSI A-squared installed and up to date and run them in turn at weekends.
A-squared is a bit slow, but picks up some things the others miss.
I have Zone Alarm rather than the Windows firewall..
Oh, and I hardly ever use Internet Explorer.

I'm with Adam and they are awesome.

Otherwise Internode...

avoid the rest.

Speak to dissident regarding a new pc, he should be able to build one for you cheaper and better than any retail outlet.

The only people that have explained computers to me are A&R.

Repaired my current computer.

Honestly I would start there.

Then shop around.

Then take your best written quote back to them.

A&R out north.

Past Elizabeth. ;)

A&R are a shocker, feel free to browse there then buy at least 25% cheaper somewhere else.

Mal,

You won't need to spend more than $600-$700, which includes, PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. If you just want the PC itself only, less than $500 is plenty.

It's much cheaper to build to spec.

I'm sure Dissident would be able to help, if not I can do it for you.

Best to get off your butt and do some research.

Learn whats out there, and weigh up what you want.

Ask Questions.

Know what you want and go for it.

Thanks 4 your help all
I walked into the showroom with a 28% knowledge of what I wanted :D
Got a TherMALtake
Windows 7
2 screens [brilliant for my punting]
I can now fit in a zillion websites on the split screens, instead of the ice age 1 tab at a time PC i used to have
Spent a bit
No doubt Diss and Dedja could have got things done cheaper
But my IT man is a neighbour and a friend
He will be PCsitting me in my infancy
I prob would have driven Dedj and Diss crazy [Just ask my PC consultant Dutchy !!!]

Thats all

Thermaltake is the make of the case mal, not the entire pc. I used a thermaltake case when I built mine, it's top notch.
